Tony CiroRyan ValekMINNEAPOLIS (5/26/06) -- Augsburg College student-athletes Ryan Valek (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Tony Ciro (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) were named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V College Division Men's At-Large Team, as selected by CoSIDA, it was announced on Thursday.

Valek repeated his Academic All-District first-team honor from last season, while Ciro, who was named to the second team, earned Academic All-District honors for the first time.

Valek, a three-time All-American wrestler for the Auggies, repeated his individual national runner-up finish at 165 pounds in the 2005-06 season, finishing 41-4. His lone losses on the season came to a defending Division I All-American, the 2006 Division II national champion and the 2006 Division III national champion. Valek had a 28-match winning streak during the season.

Valek also finished second nationally in 2004-05 with a 34-7 record, while finishing seventh nationally in 2003-04 with a 38-10 record. He finished his career with a 133-39 record, accumulating 39 pins, four technical falls and 20 major decisions, and was a part of Auggie teams that won a national title in 2004-05, while finishing second twice (2002-03, 2003-04) and third this season.

Academically, Valek is an accounting major with a 3.74 grade-point average. He earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-America honors in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third-team honoree last season. He was named an Augsburg Senior Honor Athlete in 2006.

Ciro, a men's hockey goalie, played two seasons at Augsburg after playing his first two seasons at fellow Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school Bethel. This season, Ciro finished with a 7-7-3 record in goal, with 472 saves, an .871 save percentage and 4.27 goals-against-average in 17 games played. He recorded 32 saves in a 7-4 win over No. 2-ranked St. Norbert on Nov. 5, then notched 38 saves in a 7-4 win at No. 11-ranked Wisconsin-Superior on Jan. 13.

In 69 games in his four-season collegiate career, Ciro finished with a 28-39-8 record, 1,983 saves, an .875 save percentage and 4.29 goals-against-average.

Ciro is also a member of Augsburg's men's track and field team. This season, Ciro earned All-MIAC honors with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash at the conference meet, while earning All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash.

Ciro has a 3.92 grade-point average and is a marketing major at Augsburg.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team is part of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba are eligible for inclusion on the district team. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.20 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams.

First-team Academic All-District members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America men's at-large team will be announced on June 13, while the women's at-large team will be announced on June 15. The men's at-large team awards student-athletes in 12 sports -- golf, rifle, volleyball, gymnastics, skiing, water polo, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, wrestling, lacrosse and tennis.

From other MIAC schools, joining Valek on the Academic All-District first team were St. John's hockey player Adam Hanna and Gustavus Adolphus tennis player Roy Bryan. St. Thomas men's hockey player John Bottoms was named to the second team. On the women's Academic All-District squads, MIAC athletes named to the first team were Concordia-Moorhead women's diver Annie Cullen and Carleton golfer Kassie Wells. Named to the second team were Gustavus Adolphus tennis player Jaime Gaard and women's hockey player Margaret Dorer, and St. Thomas women's hockey player Tanaya Reitz.
