MINNEAPOLIS
-- Work is completed on the project to replace the turf at Augsburg College's
Edor Nelson Field
with Sprinturf, a "next-generation"
surface. Work on the $400,000 turf project began June 16 and was completed
in early August.
The existing Astroturf surface was removed and the new Sprinturf
synthetic-grass surface was installed over the current asphalt base with an
infill of a rubber-sand mix. Augsburg's athletic teams will begin to use the
field during the fall sports season.
Augsburg's Edor
Nelson Field, opened in 1984, is one of the most-used outdoor athletic fields
in the Twin Cities. The field is the home for four Augsburg intercollegiate
athletic teams -- football, men's soccer, women's soccer and softball -- and
is also used extensively by the college's intramural sports program, health
and physical education classes and by a variety of local sports teams and
leagues.The field is
domed during the winter months to provide for a year-round practice and competition
space for indoor soccer/lacrosse leagues and Augsburg activities.

page.

of the field. This Astroturf surface at Edor Nelson Field was in place from
1993 to 2004 and served four Augsburg varsity sports -- football, men's soccer,
women's soccer and softball -- and numerous other activities.

6/24/04 -- All the old turf is now taken off the Edor Nelson Field surface
and rolled up for removal.

6/25/04 -- All the turf is gone from Edor Nelson Field, down to the bare
popcorn asphalt base.

6/25/04 -- The asphalt is being repaired (note the circle and square marks
on the asphalt) and will be ready for the installation of the new Sprinturf
surface and tons of infill material (rubber pellets and sand) over the next
couple of weeks.

7/19/04 -- The new Sprinturf surface is nearing complete installation.
Augsburg's familiar "Cross-A" logo is prominent in the center of
the field. Yet to be installed is the "infill" of a rubber-sand
mix that will make the surface safe for athletes and the closest to a real-grass
feel of any major artificial-turf surface.

All the boundary and hashmark lines for the college's football, soccer and
softball teams will be permanently installed on the field. Yet to be installed
is the permanent lettering -- AUGSBURG in maroon letters -- in each end zone.

7/19/04 -- A close-up view of the new Sprinturf surface. The new artificial-turf
surface features 2.25-inch-long low-friction, polyethyelene fibers, designed
to mimic the feel of real grass while remaining soft, thick and crush-resistant.
Along with the long-fiber grass, the other main component for player safety
will be the "infill" of a rubber-sand mix, three pounds per square-foot,
that will be installed soon.

are in gold, while the football lines are in white. All are permanently installed
lines.

8/6/04 -- Grooming machines are in place to put the infill material into
the Sprinturf surface. The infill material, which gives the artificial turf
its grass-like feel, is made up of a rubber-sand mix of three pounds per square
foot. The solid white line below the yard marker numbers is the left-field
line for softball.

The blue backing on the underside of the letters is a permanent adhesive material.
