Baseball (16-20 overall, 8-12 MIAC--8th/11)

Under fifth-year head coach Keith Bateman, Augsburg finished 16-20 overall and 8-12 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in 2008. Bateman's teams have recorded 16 or more victories in each of his five seasons at Augsburg. The Auggies had a stretch of eight victories in a row midway through the season, including five straight victories in MIAC play. Augsburg claimed doubleheader sweeps over St. Mary's, Macalester and Hamline in conference play.

Catcher Craig Henry (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and first baseman Rick Andersen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) were named to the All-MIAC baseball squad, while centerfielder Jeff Stomberg (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), pitcher Jon-Eric Urseth (JR, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and designated hitter Mike Zaun (SR, Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) received All-MIAC honorable-mention recognition. Stomberg was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Henry earned his second straight All-MIAC first-team recognition, one of only two sophomores to be named to the 27-player All-MIAC team in both 2007 and 2008. He hit .327 (35-of-107) in 2008, with 27 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, 12 RBI, a .439 sluggging percentage and a .410 on-base percentage. Andersen had the best season of his career in 2008, hitting .406 (39-of-96), eighth-best among conference players in overall statistics and one of only 12 MIAC regulars (playing in more than 60 percent of a team's games) to hit over .400 in overall play this season. His .615 slugging percentage was 11th-best among MIAC players and his .492 on-base percentage was fifth-best. He contributed a team-high 29 RBI and a team-high 15 extra-base hits (11 doubles, three triples, one home run).

A four-year starter, Stomberg developed a reputation as one of the top defensive centerfielders in the MIAC, with a .971 fielding percentage (two errors in 68 chances) and three outfield assists this season. Urseth, in his second season as a starting pitcher after beginning his career as a reserve catcher for the Auggies, was one of the anchors of the Auggie staff, with a 4-2 record, a 4.25 earned-run average and two complete games. Augsburg's primary designated hitter during his career, Zaun appeared in 26 games (19 starts) this season, with a .339 batting average (20-of-59), with seven runs scored, five doubles, one triple, one home run, 10 RBI, a .508 slugging percentage and .399 on-base percentage.

Also this season, designated hitter Bryan Ludwig (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 College Division second team. Ludwig is a history major with a 3.66 grade-point average. Ludwig saw action in 18 of Augsburg's 36 games this season, hitting .326 (14-of-43) with seven runs scored, three doubles, one home run and 14 RBI. He had a .465 slugging percentage and .423 on-base percentage in his first season as a varsity regular.

Softball (20-23 overall, 15-7 MIAC--4th/12, MIAC playoff qualifier)

Under Tim Gormley, in his second year as Augsburg's head coach, the Auggies finished 20-23 overall and 15-7 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in 2008, one of the program's most dramatic comeback seasons in school history. After finishing 4-34 last season and starting 4-14 this season, Augsburg won 16 of its final 25 games to reach the 20-win mark for the first time since the 1995 season (20-18) and just the ninth time in the last 30 years (since the 1979 season). Augsburg reached the MIAC postseason playoffs for the first time in the event's five-year history this year, while also reaching the postseason for the first time since 1984.

Gormley was named the conference's Coach of the Year, while four Auggie players earned conference awards. Third baseman Jennifer Castillo (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) was named the MIAC's Rookie of the Year and earned All-MIAC honors, along with Auggie infielder/pitcher Tiffany Magnuson (JR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) and catcher Ashley Westerman (SR, Bemidji, Minn.). Infielder Jolene Ross (SR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. Magnuson was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Midwest Region third team as an at-large selection, while Westerman, a physics and mathematics major with a 3.57 grade-point average, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 5 College Division second team.

Castillo was one of just three first-year players to earn a spot on the 22-member All-MIAC squad this season, and the first Auggie to be named MIAC Rookie of the Year since the conference's coaches began awarding the Rookie of the Year honor in 2003. Castillo started all 43 games this season for the Auggies, 41 games at third base. She led the team with a .403 batting average (50-of-124) with 19 runs scored, six doubles and 22 RBI (second-most on the team). She was second on the squad in both slugging percentage (.452) and on-base percentage (.457), while also ranking second on the team with 11 stolen bases in 14 attempts.

Magnuson was one of only two MIAC juniors to earn All-MIAC first-team honors in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons. Augsburg's leadoff hitter, Magnuson hit .390 (53-of-136), with six doubles, five triples, two home runs and 12 RBI. She was second on the team in batting average, and led the team in both slugging percentage (.551) and on-base percentage (.461). She was 12-of-14 in stolen bases this season, one of four Auggies to have 10 or more stolen bases. Defensively, Magnuson played three positions for the Auggies this season -- first base, second base and pitcher -- and committed just four errors in 212 chances for a team-best .981 fielding percentage. Pitching for the first time in her collegiate career, Magnuson appeared in 14 games as a reliever with a 3-0 record and 4.89 earned-run average.

A catcher, Westerman finished this season hitting a career-best .331 (48-of-145), with 25 runs scored and team-highs of 31 RBI and 15 extra-base hits (11 doubles, two triples, two home runs), along with a .476 slugging percentage and .358 on-base percentage. Defensively, she threw out 11 baserunners trying to steal in 54 attempts, and had a .973 fielding percentage, with just six errors in 224 chances. In her career, Westerman started every one of the 153 games Augsburg played in her four seasons, hitting .285 (129-of-452), with 59 runs scored, 32 doubles (third-most in school history), four triples, two home runs, 66 RBI (fifth-most in school history), a .387 slugging percentage and .320 on-base percentage. She completed her career with a .949 fielding percentage, with just 34 errors in 668 chances. Her 99 career games as a catcher is a school record, as is her 31 career runners caught stealing.

Men's/Women's Outdoor Track and Field (Men 8th/11 at MIAC outdoor championships; Women 11th/12 at MIAC outdoor championships)

The Augsburg men's track and field squad placed eighth at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor championships with 38 points, marking its best team finish in the outdoor championships since the 2003 season. The MIAC meet was held May 9-10 at Hamline. Augsburg's women finished 11th with five points, completing the second half of the track and field season under 14th-year head coach Dennis Barker.

Nick Ward (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn.) claimed a conference title in the men's 100-meter dash and earned honorable-mention all-conference honors with a sixth-place finish in the men's long jump to lead the Auggies. Ward won the 100-meter dash in a personal-best time of 10.97 seconds, earning the first individual conference title for the Auggie men since 2005. Ward placed sixth in the men's long jump with a season-best 6.88-meter (21-feet-11.0) effort, while also placing eighth in the men's 200-meter dash in 22.94 seconds.

Kevin Haglund (SR, Fridley, Minn./Concordia Academy HS) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a fourth-place finish in the men's triple jump, collecting a 13.87-meter (45-feet, 6.25-inch) effort. The finish marked Haglund's fourth top-six honor in the triple jump in conference competition in his career. Earlier in the season, Haglund broke his school record in the triple jump with a wind-aided 14.27 meter (46-feet, 10.0-inches) effort, and at a last-chance qualifier meet, Haglund surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a 14.14 meter (46-feet, 4.75-inches) effort. However, he did not finish among the top athletes to qualify for the national championship meet.

D.J. Wendell (JR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a fourth-place finish in the men's 100-meter dash (11.14 seconds), as did James Strand (SO, Brainerd, Minn.) in the 400-meter dash, with a 49.46, sixth-place finish. Adam Horkey (SO, Windom, Minn.) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a fifth-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles (15.78 seconds). The Auggies' 400-meter relay of Wendell, Strand, David Nestrud (SO, Braham, Minn.) and Ward also achieved All-MIAC honorable-mention status with a fourth-place finish in 42.72 seconds.

Brent Haglund (SO, Fridley, Minn.) collected two top-15 finishes in distance events at the conference meet, placing seventh in the 10,000-meter run (31:57.35) and 11th in the 5,000-meter run (15:21.50). Earlier in the season, Haglund broke the school record in the outdoor 10,000 with a 31:40.05 effort.

On the women's side, Megan Krumrie (JR, Elk Mound, Wis.) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a sixth-place finish in the women's long jump, with a 5.08-meter (16-feet, 8.0-inches) effort. Whitney Holman (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) just missed earning All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a seventh-place finish in the women's 100-meter dash (13.15 seconds).
