Mike Schwartz resigns as Augsburg's athletic facilities director
"I've had a great run here. I was a student, an athlete, I got to come back as a coach and later as an administrator. I'll be an Auggie forever," Schwartz said. "It's just a time in my life to make a change." Schwartz served in his most recent post for four years, directing the day-to-day operations of the college's athletic facilities -- Si Melby Hall/Kennedy Center, Edor Nelson Field and the Augsburg Ice Arena. During his tenure as director, the college embarked on major improvements to the facilities, with the 2006 construction of the Kennedy Center addition to Si Melby Hall, along with a new playing surface (2004) and new bleachers (2006) at Edor Nelson Field. The college's athletic facilities not only serve the Augsburg community, but are also frequently rented out by organizations throughout the Twin Cities, including the Minneapolis Figure Skating Club, Twin Cities Sports Connection, Minnesota/USA Wrestling and other groups, making the facilities a major source of both revenue and public exposure for Augsburg. As a hockey player at Augsburg, Schwartz was a member of the 1981-82 NAIA national championship team, playing under legendary head coach Ed Saugestad. Schwartz replaced Saugestad on the Augsburg bench in 1996, and in his second year as head coach (1997-98), led the Auggies to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title and playoff championship, qualifying for the NCAA Division III national tournament and finishing fourth. That season, Schwartz was named College Division National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association. Schwartz compiled a 124-110-30 record during his Augsburg coaching tenure. Teams he coached made appearances in the MIAC postseason playoffs six times, compiling a 80-61-18 record in conference play. At Augsburg, Schwartz coached four Division III All-Americans -- Todd Cary (1998), Ryan McIntosh (1998), Jaro Cesky (2003) and Aaron Johnson (2006). Prior to returning to Augsburg, he was a coach at the high school level, leading White Bear Lake HS to three consecutive Minnesota state tournament appearances (1994-96) and two conference and Twin Cities titles at St. Paul Johnson HS. He also served as a pro hockey coach in Italy, a junior hockey coach in Iowa and a high school coach in Alaska, in addition to working as a scout for the NHL's San Jose Sharks (1990-92).
