Hoffmann is Augsburg's first preseason All-American since record-breaking wide receiver Scott Hvistendahl earned preseason honors from every major football preview publication before his senior year in 1998. Hoffmann, a two-year starter at center and a team co-captain in 2003 and this season, led an offensive line that enabled the Auggies to average 3,172 yards of total offense in 2003 (4.4 yards per carry), including 1,968 passing yards, while allowing just 19 sacks. In his two seasons as a starter, Augsburg has averaged 321.7 yards of total offense per game, including 208.6 passing yards per game, while allowing just 37 sacks (0.9 per game). Hoffmann received the team's Outstanding Lineman award in 2002, his first-year as a full-time starter, in addition to sharing the honors with Nate Anderson in 2003. An accounting major with a 3.750 grade-point average, Hoffmann was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District first team for football in 2003. He earned the team's Outstanding Academic Achievement listing in 2002 and 2003, in addition to receiving Academic All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors both seasons. D3football.com, a website that covers Division III football, named 50 individuals to its two Preseason All-American teams. Fellow MIAC school and defending national champion St. John's had two individuals named to the squad, both second-teamers: sophomore linebacker Jamie Steffensmeier and junior cornerback Mike Zauhar.
