Host Auggies place fourth in tournament
The Augsburg College volleyball team started the year off in
impressive fashion last week, winning three of its five matches
and turning in a fourth-place finish in the Augsburg Invitational.
Augsburg also whipped Northwestern-Roseville in three games
(15-2, 15-11, 15-10) in the season opener. Captain Lisa Nos,
Missy Carlson, and Angie Rieger led the Auggie attack
with seven kills apiece.
The Auggies continued their winning ways into the Augsburg
Invite, defeating UW-Stout in a tight five game match (15-9,
11-15, 4-15, 15-11, 15-11). Tasha Hamann gathered 40
assists for the Auggies, while Nos and Jessica Ness put
down 11 kills each. Next up for the Auggies was a tough UW-Eau
Claire squad. The Auggies win streak stopped at two as they
lost three straight games to Eau Claire (15-8, 15-4, 15-5).
Augsburg rebounded in their next match, making short work
of MIAC rival Carleton. The Auggies defeated the Carls in three
games (15-10, 15-5, 15-11). Augsburg faced another MIAC rival
in the third place game in St. Ben's. The Auggies started out
well, taking the first game (15-10), but weren't able to hold
on and lost the next three games (15-11, 15-7, 15-7) for a fourth
place finish. Hamann was named to the all tournament team.
Next the Auggies travel to the east coast before the MIAC season
opener against Hamline at home on Sept. 23.

the Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes, Minn., playing in
the Concordia Inviational. The Auggies finished 15th in the

runners and only one senior. The women finished 7th in the Blue
Devil Invitational. Chrissy Baune led the Auggie with
a 23rd-place finish. Teresa Lewandowski wasn't too far
behind Baune with a 31st-place finish of her own. Both the men
and women will race Saturday at the St. Olaf Invitational.
Auggie Women's Soccer:
Auggies start year out with shutout victory
Augsburg's women's soccer team got out to a quick start this
season with a gutsy 2-0 performance over visiting Wartburg.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first half, but Heather
Wagner's goal midway through the second half put the Auggies
ahead. Brenda Selander added an insurance goal a few
minutes later, giving Augsburg the win. Goalie Beth Petrik
started this year off just as she has in years past, with a shutout.
Last season Petrik had nine shutouts, and has 25 for her career.
Augsburg also played UW-Eau Claire last week, falling to the
Blugolds 5-0. Next up for the Auggies is their MIAC opener as
they travel to Northfield Tuesday to take on Carleton.

two games by a combined score of 6-2. The Auggies rebouned however,
pulling off a pair of victories at home to even there record

1-0 decision. The University of Mary came to town next and beat
the Auggies 5-2, with goals coming from Jared Zimmerman
and Carlos Martinez. Augsburg got back on track with
a 2-0 victory over Central College. Eric Roy and Scott
Dossett both put home goals for the Auggies in the win.

2-1 win over Wartburg College. They Auggies trailed 1-0 at half,
but Dossett's second half goal tied the score for the Auggies.
Roy then scored the game-winner to hand the Auggies a victory.
Auggie Football:
Title defense starts with a bang
Last season Augsburg's football team won just its second MIAC
title ever, the hunt for the third kicked off last weekend, and
the Auggies were ready. On just the second play from scrimmage
for Augsburg, quarterback Paul Tetzloff hooked up with
All-American Scott Hvistendahl on a 63-yard touchdown
pass. It was the first of four touchdown passes for the duo
as Augsburg cruised 45-13 against Mayville State (N.D.).
When the smoke had cleared, Hvistendahl had set new Augsburg
records for most yards in a game (281), most touchdown receptions
in a career (29) and tied the record for most touchdowns in a
game (4). Hvistendahl was named MIAC Offensive Player of the
Week for his efforts.
Todd Hamer led the Augsburg defense, which produced
nine turnovers -- six interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
Hamer had two interceptions and four tackles. Jake Kern
had nine tackles for the Auggie defense. Augsburg was missing
several starters from the defense, including second-team All-MIAC
pick Justin Hipple. Augsburg kicks off the MIAC season
this Saturday at 1 p.m. against Hamline at Anderson-Nelson Field.
