Auggie Football (1-0 overall, 0-0 MIAC): Dramatic win over Mayville State

Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) scored the game-tying touchdown on a fourth-down, second-effort dive into the end zone in the third overtime, then threw a game-winning two-point conversion pass to John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) as Augsburg claimed a 29-27 season-opening victory at Mayville State (N.D.) Saturday.

The Auggies rallied from deficits four times in the contest to win their opening game of the season. Augsburg has played in three overtime games since college football instituted the overtime rule in 1996, the prior two (in 1997 and 1998) just going to two overtimes each. Augsburg is now 2-1 in overtime contests.

After each team failed to score in the first two overtime sessions, Mayville State took the lead, 27-21, on a touchdown run. College football rules require that teams attempt a two-point conversion after touchdowns beginning in the third overtime, and the Comets failed to convert on a pass attempt, setting the stage for the Auggies' game-winning touchdown and two-point conversion.

The game was played in a steady rain and cold conditions that made field conditions difficult the whole game. But Augsburg took advantage of six Mayville State turnovers, including four interceptions -- three picked off by Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) in his Auggie debut, tying a single-game school record for interceptions. Loughran earned MIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for his effort.

Down 6-0 on a touchdown in the first quarter, Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) put the Auggies on the board for the first time this season with a 79-yard kickoff return. Warden also had the Auggies' next score, on a 47-yard run late in the first half. Warden led the Auggies with a career-high 132 yards on 31 rushes, the most rushing yards by an Auggie in a single game since Aaron Daubanton's 141-yard performance against St. Thomas on Oct. 21, 1995.

Augsburg travels to Hamline next Saturday (9/18/99) at 1 p.m. to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. All Auggie football games are aired live on the radio on KYCR-AM 1570.

Auggie Volleyball (3-7 overall, 1-0 MIAC): Slow start to season against tough foes

Despite a 3-7 start to the season, there are plenty of positives for the Augsburg volleyball team to take into a run for prominence in the MIAC this season.

The Auggies opened the season at the Central College Invitational Sept. 3-4 and took on the host school, the defending NCAA Division III national champions, in the first match. Augsburg was swept in three games. The next match, also a three-game sweep by St. Thomas, was highlighted by six-kill performances by Adrianne Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm HS) and Cassi Van Ausdall (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.). Augsburg then faced rival Gustavus and fell in four tough games, 13-15, 15-13, 16-14, 16-14. Emily Walen (Jr., Hastings, Minn.), a transfer from California Lutheran, led the Auggies with 49 set assists, while Van Ausdall had 13 kills and 33 digs. Missy Carlson (Sr., Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) had 11 kills and 19 digs. The final match was a 3-1 win over William Penn (Iowa), 12-15, 15-4, 15-9, 15-11. Jessica Ness (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had 22 digs and 11 kills to highlight the victory, while Rieger and Van Ausdall had 13 kills apiece. Carlson was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Auggies.

On Wednesday, the Auggies traveled to Roseville to take on the Northwestern Eagles. Augsburg rallied after losing the first two games 15-8, 15-10 to win the third and fourth games by the same margin, forcing a deciding fifth set. But the Auggies were stunned in the final game, dropping a rare 15-0 contest to lose the match. Augsburg played much of the match without starting outside hitter Van Ausdall, who was injured in the first game. Paula Pogatchnik (Fr., Finlayson, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) shined in her place, with 12 kills and a block. Walen had 44 assists and Ness led the way with 19 digs.

The Auggies hosted the 18th annual Augsburg Invitational Tournament over the weekend and finished sixth in the eight-team field. Augsburg opened with a tough four-game loss to Bethel, dropping 16-18, 15-13, 16-14, 15-10. Walen led the Auggies with 42 assists, while Carlson had 19 kills and 20 digs. The Auggies rebounded with an easy three-game win over Wisconsin-Superior, 15-11, 15-5, 15-9. Ness had 11 kills and 17 digs, and Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm HS), returning to the Auggies after missing the Central tournament with an injury, had 10 kills and a block. Tiffany Lynch (Jr., Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) had 11 digs. On Saturday, the Auggies played perennial MIAC power St. Olaf and fell in three games, 15-7, 15-9, 15-5. Carlson had nine kills to lead the Auggies, while Laura Winter (So., Blaine, Minn.) shined defensively with 12 digs. In the final match, against Macalester, the Auggies again fell in three games, 15-5, 17-15, 15-7. Walen had 34 assists, while three players had 10-plus kills -- Carlson with 15, Angie Rieger with 10 and Ness with 10 (plus 19 digs). Angie Rieger was named to the All-Tournament Team by the eight coaches.

On Tuesday night, the Auggies traveled to Moorhead to open MIAC league play against Concordia-Moorhead. Augsburg came away with a well-deserved five-game win, 15-13, 15-12, 14-16, 13-15, 15-8. Carlson led the Auggies with 17 kills, while Ness had 26 digs and Walen contributed 41 assists.

Augsburg hosts the first 75th anniversary of athletics event of the season with its alumni match on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, before a match with defending MIAC champion St. Benedict next Wednesday.

Auggie Men's Golf: Fourth place at Bemidji Invite

Augsburg has high hopes for the men's golf team this season, with a goal of wresting the MIAC championship away from perennial power Gustavus. With the first meet of the fall half of the season under their belts, the Auggies' goals of passing up the Gusties may be realistic. While the Gusties' Gold team won the Bemidji State Invitational Sunday and Monday with a 455 score (27 holes), Augsburg's No. 1 squad finished a respectable fourth with a 464 total, just nine strokes off the Gusties' pace. Augsburg's No. 2 squad finished 13th in the 16 team field with a 484 total.

Hans Anderson (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.), who returned to Augsburg after a year's absence, placed sixth in the individual competition with a 113 total (73-40), two shots off medalist honors. Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) finished ninth overall with a 114 (76-38). Four Auggie golfers finished with sub-120 scores -- joining Anderson and Van Rossum were Robert Wagner (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) with a 119 and Ted Vickerman (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) with a 116 to lead the Augsburg II squad.

Augsburg has another tough fall meet this weekend, the Irv Kaiser/North Dakota State Invitational in Fargo, N.D.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Auggies Men's Soccer (1-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC): Two-game split in North Dakota

Augsburg opened its men's soccer season with a respectable split of games at a three-team tournament at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The Auggies opened with a 6-1 win over Pillsbury Baptist Bible College on Sept. 4. The game featured a three-goal hat trick from Scott Dossett (So., Orono, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS), Augsburg's leading scorer last season. He scored the first two goals of the game in a four-minute span midway through the first half, then popped his third tally early in the second half. Dan Walker (So., Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) had a goal and assist, while Eric Roy (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Scott Robertson (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) added goals. Carlos Martinez (Jr., Bogota, Colombia/Hopkins HS) had two assists.

Next up was host University of Mary, rated in the top 20 in the NAIA. A 6-0 loss was the result. Augsburg was limited to just three shots in the contest. Augsburg has an extended layoff before returning to action on Monday with a nonconference game at Wartburg (Iowa).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Auggie Women's Soccer (0-4 overall, 0-0 MIAC): Low numbers to start year

It's been a rough start to the season for Augsburg's women's soccer team, as low numbers of athletes coming out for the team have literally forced the team to play shorthanded early on.

A key example was Augsburg's first two games of the year, played in a three-team meet at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. In a 7-1 loss to Jamestown (N.D.) College, the Auggies were only able to dress nine players, due to preseason injuries. Brenda Selander (Jr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) had the lone goal for the Auggies. The next day, against host University of Mary, the Auggies were only able to dress eight players in a 6-0 loss. Augsburg was limited to just one shot on goal, while Mary peppered Auggie goalie Laura Grant (Fr., Starbuck, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) with 33 shots. She made 13 saves on the day.

Over this past weekend and with a full complement of players healthy, the Auggies travelled to the Pacific Northwest for two games against Oregon schools. On Friday, the Auggies suffered a 9-0 loss at Concordia University in Portland, Ore. Selander and Christina Olstad (Sr., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had the lone shots on goal for the Auggies, as Augsburg was outshot 40-2. Katie Cheese (So., Shakopee, Minn.), playing her first collegiate game in goal, made 17 saves. Cheese made 14 saves, facing 33 shots, in a 4-0 loss on Sunday at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. Augsburg did not have a shot on goal in the contest, as most of the action was played on the home side of the field.

Nate Loughran, freshman, Football
