Auggie Volleyball: Auggies storm through East Coast tour

The volleyball team's final test before the MIAC season came last week, and the Auggies passed with flying colors. Not only did the Auggies win all four matches they played, they lost only one game in the process.

First in line for the Auggies was Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a match on Thursday. It took Augsburg a game to find its stride, as it fell 17-15. The Auggies stormed back however, taking the next three games from MIT 15-10, 15-12, 15-12. Angie Rieger, just back from injury, dominated the net with 13 kills in the four games. Tasha Hamann served up Rieger and the rest of the Auggies with 35 assists.

After dismantling MIT, the Auggies participated in the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass., on Saturday. The Auggies continued to shine, winning nine straight games against Massachusetts schools and taking the tournament championship home to Minnesota. First the Auggies played the host school, Brandeis, winning convincingly (15-13, 15-7, 15-6). Jessica Ness had eight kills for the Auggies in that match. Augsburg then knocked off St. Joseph's in three (15-5, 15-5, 15-9), before dispatching Emerson in an easy win (15-3, 15-2, 15-1).

Auggie Football: Auggies get MIAC victory over Hamline

Things weren't looking particularly good for the Augsburg football team at halftime of last Saturday's game against Hamline. The Auggies were only ahead 7-0, and their starting quarterback, Paul Tetzloff, was out of the game with an injury. The Auggies responded however, as freshman quarterback Joe Thorvig led the Auggies to a 24-14 victory in the MIAC opener. Augsburg is now 2-0 overall.

Of course, Thorvig didn't do the job alone, and leading the supporting cast was the ever-impressive Scott Hvistendahl. Hvistendahl had nine catches for 161 yards and the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter to give Augsburg the win. Tight end Tim Hamer had five catches and two touchdowns.

Leading the defensive effort, which held the Pipers to only 240 yards of offense, was Andy Howard (11 tackles) and Steve Sathre, who had seven tackles, including three for loss. The Augsburg defense forced four fumbles in the game, raising their season total to seven. Augsburg has 13 takeaways and just five giveaways on the season, and Auggie quarterbacks have not thrown an interception so far this season.

The Auggies (2-0, 1-0 MIAC) travel to St. Olaf for their next contest. Augsburg will look to break two long streaks in the game against the Oles -- Augsburg has not won a game in Northfield, against either Carleton or St. Olaf, since 1978 (a 28-7 win at Carleton), and Augsburg's last win at St. Olaf's home field came in 1928 (a 13-0 win).

Auggie Cross Country: Auggies compete at St. Olaf Invitational

Both Augsburg's men's and women's cross country teams ran in the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday, with the men finishing 10th and the women in 17th place. Eric Bloemendal led the Auggies in his first race of the season after missing last week's race with an injury. Bloemendal crossed the finish line at 27:40, good enough for a 22nd-place finish overall. Lawrence Mboga (33rd) and Christian Dawson (35th) also ran well for the Auggies in the race.

Chrissy Baune was the women's team's top finisher with a time of 22:03. Baune was followed to the finish line by Teresa Lewandowski who finished the race in 22:09.

-----------------
Auggie Men's Golf: Auggies place fifth at NDSU Invite

Augsburg's men's golf team competed at the North Dakota State University/Irv Kaiser Invitational over the weekend. The Auggies had another impressive showing, ending up fifth overall. MIAC rival Gustavus was the tournament champion. Augsburg's second team also played well, finishing in 13th place.

The Auggies were paced by Kevin VanRossum, whose three-day total of 229 was good enough for a fifth place individual finish. Todd Tourand also finished in the top 10 for the Auggies with a three-day total of 233.

-----------------
Auggie Women's Soccer: A rough outing in MIAC opener

The MIAC season got off to a rocky start for the women's soccer team. The Auggies travelled to Northfield last Tuesday, where they got a cool reception from Carleton, falling 7-1.

The Carls ripped off three goals before the first half was over, putting the Auggies into a deep whole. Things got worse in the second half as Carleton got four more goals before Brenda Selander put the Auggies on the board with four minutes left.

An MIAC home game with Hamline on Saturday was postponed because of severe weather. A rescheduling date has not been set yet. The Auggies record now stands at 0-1 in the MIAC and 1-2 overall.

-----------------
Auggie Men's Soccer: Auggies shut out in MIAC opener

The Auggies' MIAC season began at Anderson-Nelson Field last Wednesday, where the visiting Carleton Knights shut out the Auggies 1-0.

The game was scoreless at the half before Carleton snuck a goal past goalie Morgan Davidsen. The Auggies were outshot 12-2 in the defeat. The loss ended Augsburg's two-game winning streak, and dropped their record to 2-3, 0-1 in the MIAC.

Augsburg was to play at Hamline on Saturday afternoon, but a scheduling conflict at Hamline forced the game to be postponed. A rescheduling date has not been set yet.

Auggie Women's Golf: Auggies top Carleton in dual meet

Augsburg's women's golf team, playing in cold and windy conditions in Northfield, topped Carleton 407-498 in a dual meet on Monday.

Andrea Sievert took medalist honors for the Auggies with a 92, the lone round under 100 among the eight golfers. Liz Cebula shot a 100, Erica Huls shot a 107 and Becky Esser shot a 108.

Augsburg competes in the Southwest State Invitational in Marshall, Minn., this weekend.
