Auggie
Football (2-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC): Still unbeaten after win
at Hamline
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran
HS) rushed for 100-plus yards for the second straight week, putting
together a 32-carry, 126-yard performance as Augsburg opened
the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season with
a 15-10 win at Hamline on Saturday. Augsburg remains unbeaten,
improving to 2-0 overall.
Warden, who rushed for 132 yards in the Auggies' 29-27, two-overtime
win at Mayville State (N.D.) last weekend, scored his third touchdown
of the season on a 1-yard plunge in the first period to open
the scoring on Saturday. The Pipers scored in the second quarter,
but in the third period, Augsburg claimed a lead it would not
relinquish. Three plays after Augsburg's Matt Chappuis
(So., Faribault, Minn.) forced a fumble on a sack and Kurt
Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) recovered,
Auggie quarterback Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.)
hit Desman Oakley (Jr., Indianola, Iowa) on a 30-yard
pass for a touchdown. Matt Van Alstine (Jr., Cottage Grove,
Minn./Park HS) added a 33-yard field goal for the Auggies.
Augsburg's defense held Hamline to 298 yards of total offense,
while the Auggie offense produced 323. Tetzloff completed 15
passes for 164 yards in the contest. Oakley had 63 receiving
yards on three catches.
Freshman Nate Loughran (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn
HS) claimed his fourth interception of the season in Saturday's
contest, while Rob Just (Sr., Farmington, Minn./St. Croix
Lutheran HS) also had a pickoff.
Chappuis had 12 tackles (six solo) to lead the Auggies and
earn MIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, marking the second
week in a row that an Auggie has earned the honor. Andy Howard
(Jr., Waseca, Minn.) had nine tackles (three solo). Jake Kern
(Sr., Faribault, Minn.) and Jason Van Houten (Sr., Bloomington,
Minn./Kennedy HS) had six tackles (four solo) apiece.
Augsburg has its home opener this Saturday (9/25) at 7 p.m.
against St. Olaf at Anderson-Nelson Field. The game will be aired
live on KKMS-AM 980.

Auggie
Volleyball (3-7 overall, 1-0 MIAC): Top Concordia in MIAC
opener
Last Tuesday, Augsburg traveled to Moorhead to open MIAC league
play against Concordia-Moorhead. Augsburg came away with a well-deserved
five-game win, 15-13, 15-12, 14-16, 13-15, 15-8. Missy Carlson
(Sr., Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) led the Auggies with
17 kills, while Jessica Ness (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.)
had 26 digs and Emily Walen (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) contributed
41 assists.
The Auggies continue MIAC play on Wednesday night (9/22),
hosting defending conference champion St. Benedict at 7:30 p.m.
at Si Melby Hall. The Auggies compete at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire
Tournament this weekend before hosting St. Olaf next Wednesday.

Auggie Men's
Golf: Auggies claim title at NDSU meet
Augsburg's men's golf team continued its strong start to the
season with an impressive effort at the Irv Kaiser/North Dakota
State Invitational Friday-Sunday in Fargo, N.D. Competing against
several Division II teams, the Division III Auggies claimed the
championship at the meet by two strokes over the University of
North Dakota and by five strokes over host NDSU. Augsburg I finished
the 16-team meet with a three-day total of 941 (322-308-311).
Augsburg II was 11th with 993 (326-325-342).
While the Auggies have plenty of experience returning, it
was youth who served the team in the victory in North Dakota.
Ted Vickerman (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.), in just his
second collegiate meet, claimed medalist honors with a three-day
total of 228 (80-74-74). His two 74 rounds were the low individual
rounds in the field. Sean Anderson (So., Fargo, N.D.)
finished third with a total of 232 (81-74-78) and Kevin Van
Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) finished ninth with
a 235 total (80-77-78). Adam Botten (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Wahpeton,
N.D. HS) led the Augsburg II contingent with a 240 (78-78-84)
total.
The Auggies continue the fall half of the season with another
difficult meet, the St. John's Invitational Sunday and Monday.
The event will be held at the Wapicada Country Club in St. Cloud
and the Meadows Golf Club in Ramsey.

Auggies
Men's Soccer (1-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC): Two-game split in North
Dakota
Augsburg's men's soccer team has had an extended layoff from
its first two games, in a weekend event in North Dakota, to its
most recent game on Monday afternoon. Nonetheless, the Auggies
have emerged from their first few nonconference forays with a
2-1 record and plenty of optimism for first-year coach Mike
Navarre.
After a 14-day layoff, the Auggies travelled to Waverly, Iowa,
to take on Wartburg College, and came away with a come-from-behind
2-1 win. Down 1-0 early in the second half, Dossett and Dan
Walker (So., Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) scored goals
four minutes apart to claim the win. Dossett scored his team-high
fourth goal of the season on a pass from Eric Roy (Sr.,
Coon Rapids, Minn.) at the 50:59 mark. Dossett then assisted
on the game-winning goal by Walker at the 54:48 mark. The goal
was Walker's second of the season.
Gustavo Quintiliano (Jr., Brasilia, Brazil/Mound-Westonka
HS) started in goal and played the first half, with Morgan
Davidsen (Sr., Holen, Norway), Augsburg's starting goalkeeper
the last three seasons, getting his first action of the season
in a relief effort in the second half. The Auggies were outshot
by the Knights 15-14 in the contest.
Augsburg hosts Bethel on Wednesday afternoon and travels to
Macalester on Saturday before returning to Anderson-Nelson Field
for a Tuesday contest against St. John's.

Auggie
Women's Soccer (0-6 overall, 0-1 MIAC): Losses to St. Catherine,
Bethel
The College of St. Catherine spoiled Augsburg's hopes of getting
its first win of the season last Thursday, as a first-half goal
was all the Wildcats would need for a 1-0 victory over the Auggies
in a nonconference game at Anderson-Nelson Field. The Wildcats
outshot Augsburg by a 7-5 margin in the contest, though Auggie
goalkeeper Katie Cheese (So., Shakopee, Minn.), playing
in just her third collegiate game in goal, made six saves in
a strong effort.
The Auggies opened MIAC play with a game at Bethel on Tuesday.
Despite losing 5-1 to the Royals, the Auggies still made progress.
Augsburg's Brenda Selander (Jr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan
HS) scored Augsburg's only goal of the game, her second (and
the team's second) of the year. Cheese was again solid in goal,
making 18 saves while facing 28 shots.
But the road doesn't get much easier for the Auggies this
weekend, with two games on the docket. Saturday, the Auggies
host defending Division III national champion Macalester, and
on Sunday afternoon, Cornell College of Iowa visits Anderson-Nelson
Field.

Men's/Women's Cross Country: Season opens on Friday
Augsburg's men's and women's cross country teams have high
hopes for the 1999 season, as depth should help both teams move
up the MIAC and regional ladder. The teams' first test will come
on Friday evening, as they will compete at the Carleton College
Invitational in Northfield.
The next day will be another of Augsburg's 75th anniversary
of athletics special events. During the football home game Saturday
evening against St. Olaf, Augsburg's track and field and cross
country teams will hold their anniversary alumni celebration.
There will be a reception for track and field/cross country alumni
before the game, and the alumni and teams will be honored at
halftime of the football game.
