Auggie Football: Auggies squeak by St. Olaf

It was 1928 when the Auggies last won a football game at Manitou Field in St. Olaf, and 1978 when Augsburg last won against either St. Olaf or Carleton in Northfield. Until Thane Drier's 62-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter on Saturday, it looked like those streaks would continue. The Auggies prevailed 31-24, however on the strength of Drier's 117-yard performance.

Linebacker Andy Howard got the Auggies off on the right track with his 31-yard interception return for a touchdown on the games's opening drive. Howard had the right stuff for the Auggies all day, leading them with 11 tackles and breaking up a pass en route to selection as MIAC Defensive Player of the Week. Guillaume Paek and Jason Van Houten each had 2.5 sacks for the Auggies as the team recorded seven total sacks.

Augsburg (2-0 MIAC, 3-0 overall) now gets ready to battle also-undefeated St. John's this weekend. This contest will take place at Anderson-Nelson Field on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. Both Augsburg and St. John's are ranked in the Football Gazette Division III national poll, with the Auggies ranked 9th (Augsburg's highest ranking ever) and the Johnnies ranked 19th. Gates will open at 5 p.m. for Saturday's contest.

Auggie Volleyball: Auggies win in five against Hamline

The volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to claim its first MIAC victory of the season, a 3-2 match win over Hamline last Wednesday at Si Melby Hall. The Auggies had to rally after losing the first game, 17-15, but came back to win the second, 15-9, before falling behind again at 15-13. But wins in the fourth game, 16-14, and in the rally-scoring fifth game, 15-7, produced victory for the Auggies.

Angie Rieger continued to play solid volleyball for the Auggies, with 20 kills and 20 digs. Jessica Ness added nine kills and 22 digs, while Cassi Van Ausdall had a team-high 23 digs to go with eight kills. Tasha Hamann shined in the setting position, with 52 assists in the five games.

On Friday night, the Auggies were swept by one of the top teams in the conference, St. Benedict, 17-15, 15-8 and 15-9. Lisa Nos had eight kills and 15 digs to lead the Auggies. Hamann had 26 assists and Ness had a team-high three service aces.

Augsburg, off to one of its best starts in recent years at 8-3 overall, have three important conference matches this week, traveling to St. Mary's on Wednesday and St. Thomas on Friday before hosting Gustavus Saturday at 3 p.m.

Auggie Men's Golf: Auggies finish 2nd at St. John's Invitational

The men's golf team continued to play well at the St. John's Invitational over the weekend. Led by Robert Wagner's two-day total of 153, the Auggies finished second to host St. John's in the tournament. Wagner finished fourth overall in the tournament. As a team, Augsburg shot 624, just nine strokes off the pace set by the Johnnies. Todd Tourand and Kevin Van Rossum both shot 156 for the Auggies, who were also in second place after the first day of the tournament.

The Auggies also faced Macalester in a dual meet last Wednesday at Highland Park Golf Club in St. Paul, with Augsburg's two squads scoring 292 and 309, compared to Macalester's 324. Van Rossum shined for Augsburg in the single-round meet, scoring an even-par 72, while Wagner and Chris McLeod each shot a 73.

Next up for Augsburg is one of the top college meets of the fall, the Twin Cities Classic, this weekend.

--------------------------------------------------
Auggie Women's Golf: Auggies place ninth at SSU Invitational

Andrea Sievert finished in the top 20 to lead the Auggies to a ninth place finish at the Southwest State Invitational. Sievert shot a 88 and 90 in the two-day event. Liz Cebula was right behind Sievert with a 179 in the tournament.

The Auggies will next compete at the MIAC Championships this weekend. The Auggies will be hosting the event, which will be held at the Oakdale Golf Club in Hutchinson, Minn. The tournament starts at 12 noon on Saturday, and at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.

--------------------------------------------------
Auggie Women's Soccer: Auggies suffer shutout losses

The women's soccer team lost a MIAC match to St. Thomas last week. The Auggies struggled both offensively and defensively in the 4-0 loss. St. Thomas outshot the Auggies 25-0 in the game. Goalie Beth Petrik had 21 saves for the Auggies.

On Sunday, the Auggies traveled to Decorah, Iowa, to take on Luther College in a nonconference game, but the result was another shutout loss, 2-0. Luther outshot Augsburg 30-3, and Petrik made 16 saves. Augsburg is now 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC, and hosts Bethel Saturday at 1 p.m. at Anderson-Nelson Field.

--------------------------------------------------
Auggie Men's Soccer: Second half hurts Auggies

The Auggies were tied at the half with St. Thomas, but weren't able to hold on, losing their second MIAC game 3-1. Eric Roy got the Auggies out to a quick start, scoring just 30 seconds into the game. St. Thomas got three unanswered goals however to beat the Auggies.

On Saturday, the Auggies traveled to Northfield to take on St. Olaf, but a mixup in starting times for the game gave the decision to St. Olaf on a forfeit. The game may be rescheduled.

Augsburg will look to get back on the winning track when it travels to Bethel on Wednesday. Augsburg hosts Northland (Wis.) on Sunday at 4 p.m.
