Auggie
Football (3-0 overall, 2-0 MIAC): Remain unbeaten, St. John's
is next
Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran)
scored on a 7-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter Saturday
night to provide the eventual winning margin as the Auggies
remained unbeaten with a 30-27 win over St. Olaf at Anderson-Nelson
Field.
The Auggies won despite giving up 482 yards of total offense
to the Oles, while compiling 372 yards. However, the Auggies
forced five St. Olaf turnovers (three interceptions and two fumbles),
while committing just two (one interception, one fumble) in the
back-and-forth struggle.
Quarterback Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) threw
two touchdown passes to Mark Johnson (So., Hastings, Minn.),
as Augsburg opened up a 23-9 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Tetzloff had opened the scoring on a one-yard touchdown plunge
in the first period.
Warden rushed for 76 yards on 26 carries to lead the Auggies,
who were held under the 100-yard mark in rushing for the first
time this season. Augsburg compiled 90 yards on 34 carries, while
Tetzloff threw for a season-high 297 yards, completing 20 of
39 passes with one interception.
Johnson had 69 receiving yards on four catches, while Tim
Murphy (So., Northfield, Minn./Lakeville HS) had five catches
for 61 yards. In all, six Auggies caught passes, including Desman
Oakley's (Jr., Indianola, Iowa) three-catch, 52-yard effort.
Rob Just (Sr., Farmington, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) had
two interceptions for the Auggies, to go with 10 tackles (five
solo) on the night. Just now has three interceptions on the season,
second-most on the team.
Kurt Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) had
13 tackles (nine solo) and Andy Howard (Jr., Waseca, Minn.)
had nine tackles (seven solo) and an interception.
Augsburg has its most important game of the season so far
on Saturday, when it plays at St. John's for the Johnnies' Homecoming
game. The Johnnies are also 3-0 and are rated fifth in the nation,
according to the AFCA Division III national poll. Augsburg received
enough votes in the poll to rate 30th. If you can't make it to
Collegeville, listen to the game live on KYCR-AM 1570.

Auggie
Volleyball (5-10 overall, 1-1 MIAC): Fall to St. Ben's, take
fifth at UW-Eau Claire meet
Augsburg College has had a difficult schedule to open the
1999 volleyball season. From playing the defending Division III
national champions, Central (Iowa), in the season's first match
to a steady diet of tournament games against the best teams in
Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, the Auggies' 5-10 mark coming
into tonight's match against St. Olaf could be carried as a badge
of honor. After all, after tonight, the most difficult stretch
of the Auggies' season will be behind them.
Augsburg recovered from a 15-1 first-game loss to St. Benedict
last Wednesday night to play well in a three-game loss to the
defending MIAC champions, 15-1, 15-5, 14-16. The Auggies could
manage only 31 kills and just one block in the match. Angie
Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm HS) had six kills and
10 digs to lead the Auggies, while Jessica Ness (Sr.,
Cannon Falls, Minn.) had six kills and nine digs and Adrianne
Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm HS) added six kills.
Tiffany Lynch (Jr., Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS)
had four service aces, all in the third game of the match.
Augsburg competed in the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tournament over
the weekend and came away with fifth-place honors. The Auggies
lost the opener to the host Blugolds, 15-7, 15-7, 15-2, then
rallied to beat Northland (Wis.) 15-6, 15-8, 15-3. On Saturday,
Augsburg lost to Wisconsin-Stevens Point 15-12, 15-8, 15-7 before
finishing the meet with a three-game sweep of Wisconsin-Superior,
15-11, 15-10, 15-11. Angie Rieger was named to the All-Tournament
Team, her second such honor of the season.
Among the highlights of the tournament included Missy Carlson's
(Sr., Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) nine kills against
UW-Eau Claire and 13 against UW-Stevens Point; Ness' nine kills
and 10 digs against Northland; Angie Rieger's nine kills and
three blocks against Northland; Emily Walen's (Jr., Hastings,
Minn.) 46-assist, 16-dig effort against UW-Superior; and Adrianne
Rieger's 14-kills and 11 digs against UW-Superior.

Auggie Men's
Golf: Auggies second at St. John's meet
Augsburg's men's golf team opened last weekend's St. John's
Invitational tournament with a strong first day, but a not-so-strong
second. The result was a second-place finish with a total of
628 (310-318), 15 strokes behind St. John's Red, which won the
title. Augsburg II finished seventh in the 10-team meet with
a 344-330--674 total.
Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS) finished
second overall with two strong rounds, shooting a 74-76 for a
two-day total of 150, one stroke off medalist honors. Hans
Anderson (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) placed ninth with
a 156 (79-77) total. Sean Anderson (So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo
South HS) shot an impressive first-round 74, but suffered an
injury during the second round and could only manage an 84 for
a two-day total of 158.
Augsburg also competed in a four-team meet hosted by the University
of Minnesota junior varsity at Les Bolstad Golf Course in St.
Paul on Tuesday. The Auggies came out on top with a total of
303. Hans Anderson earned medalist honors with a round of 72.
Kevin Sanft (So., St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS) placed sixth
with a 75, Van Rossum took ninth with a 76, Adam Botten (So.,
St. Cloud, Minn./Wahpeton, N.D., HS) finished 15th with an 81
and Ted Vickerman (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished
16th with an 83.
Augsburg has one of its most important meets of the year this
weekend, when it competes at the Twin Cities Classic, hosted
by Gustavus Adolphus College at three top golf courses in the
Twin Cities. The meet features the top small-college teams in
the Midwest, including the key rivals in the MIAC that will compete
at the conference meet Oct. 8-9.

Auggies
Men's Soccer (2-4 overall, 0-3 MIAC): Three MIAC losses in
a row
Augsburg's men's soccer team has gotten off to a rocky start
in the MIAC race this season, with three losses in a row against
good opponents. Last Wednedsay, the Auggies lost a frustrating
6-4 game to Bethel at home, followed by a 5-0 loss at defending
MIAC champ Macalester on Saturday and a 6-1 loss to St. John's
on Tuesday.
Against Bethel, Dan Walker (So., Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska
Area HS) had two goals for the Auggies, including the lone goal
for the Auggies in the first half. Down 4-1, Eric Roy
(Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) cut the lead with a goal, followed
by a goal from Scott Dossett (So., Orono, Minn./Mound-Westonka
HS) on an assist from Roy. With Augsburg down a player due to
a red-card ejection, Walker notched his second goal of the game
with 27 minutes remaining, but the Auggies could edge no closer
than a one-goal deficit.
Against Macalester, the Auggies couldn't find a rhythm on
offense, as they were limited to just two shots on goal, one
in each half. Meanwhile, Macalester had 15 shots on goal in the
game, and peppered starting goalie Morgan Davidsen (Sr.,
Holen, Norway) with four goals in the first half. Gustavuo
Quintiliano (Jr., Brasilia, Brazil/Mound-Westonka HS) finished
the game in the net and allowed a goal.
The Auggies and Johnnies appeared headed for a close, tense
game in the first half on Tuesday, when the teams could each
only muster a shot on goal for a 1-1 tie at halftime. But St.
John's poured it on in the second half, scoring five goals to
make it a runaway win. Augsburg scored first 15 minutes into
the contest, as Chad Skogen (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn.)
put in a corner kick from Roy. Davidsen made five saves in a
losing effort.
The Auggies host St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon at Anderson-Nelson
Field.

Auggie
Women's Soccer (0-8 overall, 0-2 MIAC): Close loss to defending
national champs
If there were such things as moral victories, Augsburg would
have certainly claimed its 3-0 loss to Macalester on Saturday
afternoon as one. The Auggies played tough against the defending
Division III national champions, and only trailed 1-0 at the
half. However, Macalester scored twice in the second stanza and
did not allow an Augsburg shot on goal in the entire contest.
Katie Cheese (So., Shakopee, Minn.) made six saves in
goal for the Auggies in a losing effort.
On Sunday, the Auggies hosted another winless team, Cornell
College of Iowa, at Anderson-Nelson Field. But it was Cornell
that claimed its first win of the years, sending the Auggies
to a 4-1 defeat. Augsburg's lone goal also came on a penalty
kick from Sarah Verner (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) in the
92nd minute of play. Cornell outshot Augsburg by a 10-8 margin,
with Cheese making five saves.
Augsburg returns to action with a game at St. Benedict on
Wednesday at 4 p.m., followed by a contest Saturday at St. Thomas
and Tuesday at Carleton. The games are the last road contests
for the Auggies this year before ending the year with six straight
games at home.

Men's/Women's Cross Country: Bloemendal wins Carleton invite
Augsburg's Eric Bloemendal (Jr., Huntsville, Ontario)
ran a strong race on Saturday in the Carleton Invitational in
Northfield, covering the 8,000-meter course in 26:41 to take
first place overall and lead Augsburg's men to a fifth-place
team finish in the meet.
In all, three Auggies placed in the top 10 in the meet --
Christian Dawson (So., Invercargill, New Zealand/Cargill
HS) placed third in 27:11 and Lawrence Mboga (So., Nairobi,
Kenya/Men Yem Ya HS) placed seventh in 27:41. Augsburg's women
placed fourth among the four teams in the Carleton Invitational.
Teresa Lewandowski (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) was the top
Auggie finisher, claiming seventh place overall with a time of
20:23 over 5,000 meters.
Augsburg faces another strong challenge this weekend, when
it competes against schools from across the Midwest at the Wartburg
Invitational in Waverly, Iowa, on Saturday.
