Auggie News: Devean George signs with Lakers; Lute Olson speaks
at Augsburg
Two Augsburg alumni made news over the past couple of weeks,
one away from campus and one on campus.
On Oct. 4, Devean
George (Augsburg '99) signed a three-year contract with
the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers. No terms were announced by the
Lakers, but as the 23rd overall selection in the NBA draft, George
is eligible for a guaranteed three-year contract for $2.1 million,
not including a signing bonus, according to the NBA's collective
bargaining agreement. Prior to signing, the L.A. Times reported
George confirming a three-year, guaranteed deal for $2.12 million
with incentives that could trigger $400,000 more. The Lakers
hold an option for a fourth year.
George's preseason debut was Wednesday night (10/13), when
he scored seven points and had four rebounds in 15 minutes of
playing time in the Lakers' 88-84 loss to Washington in Kansas
City, Mo. The Lakers open the regular season Nov. 2 at 9:30 p.m.
at Utah. The game will be broadcast nationally on the TNT cable
network. In all, 26 Lakers games are scheduled to be broadcast
on national television or cable this season.
George, who scored 2,258 career points and pulled down 868
career rebounds at Augsburg, made NBA history in June when he
became the first NCAA Division III basketball player ever selected
in the first round as the 23rd overall pick of the draft by the
Lakers. George was the first Division III player selected in
the draft since 1991, and the third Augsburg player ever selected
in the NBA Draft. Greg Boone, who played for the Auggies from
1979-81, was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as a 10th-round
pick in 1981, but never played in the NBA. Dan Anderson (Augsburg
'65) was drafted in the third round by the Philadelphia Warriors
in 1965. He later played in the ABA with the New Jersey Americans
(later New Jersey Nets).
Lute Olson (Augsburg '56) returned to Augsburg during
Homecoming week to help the school celebrate the 75th
anniversary of its intercollegiate athletics program. Olson,
the two-time National Coach of the Year and men's basketball
head coach at the University of Arizona, was the keynote speaker
at Augsburg's 75th Anniversary of Athletics/Hall of Fame banquet
at the Christensen Center on Oct. 7. He spoke to an overflow
crowd of more than 400 alumns, students and friends about his
experiences at Augsburg and what the college has meant to him.
In addition to speaking at the dinner, he also was a featured
speaker on campus during the day. He spoke to a large crowd at
chapel in the morning, and also spoke to Lutheran leaders at
a luncheon and to a large group of current student-athletes and
coaches.

Auggie
Football (3-2 overall, 2-2 MIAC): Auggies drop two in a row
Augsburg entered the Oct. 2 game against St. John's with hopes
of pulling off a major upset and moving up in the national polls
and in the race for the MIAC championship. But those hopes were
dashed with a 55-0 loss to the Johnnies before 8,000 fans in
Collegeville.
The loss was the first shutout defeat of an Auggie squad since
a 28-0 loss to Concordia-Moorhead Nov. 6, 1993 in the Metrodome,
and the worst shutout loss since a 62-0 loss at Concordia-Moorhead
Nov. 7, 1992. It was St. John's first shutout of the Auggies
in the series since a 58-0 triumph at Augsburg on Sept. 19, 1992.
The Auggies couldn't get any offensive momentum going in the
game, as the Auggies were intercepted six times and outgained
420-210 by the Johnnies, rated fifth in the nation at the time
in the AFCA Division III national polls. St. John's led the game
42-0 at halftime and returned two of the six interceptions in
the game for touchdowns.
The only Auggie highlight of the game was the play of Jake
Kern (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), who claimed his first interception
of the season and had a team-high 10 tackles (six solo). The
interception was his first of the season and the 11th of his
career, putting him into fourth place in that category in school
history. The school record, 17, was set by Jeremy Dalluge
from 1992-95.
A week later, Augsburg hosted its Homecoming game against
Gustavus. But the Gusties spoiled the Auggies' Homecoming game,
38-12. Gustavus outgained Augsburg by a 422-179 margin in total
offense. Augsburg could only muster 32 net rushing yards and
147 passing yards. The Gusties dominated every statistic in the
contest, with 27 first downs to Augsburg's eight and a time of
possession edge of 35:08 to 24:52.
Paul Tetzloff (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) was limited to
104 passing yards, completing just eight of 15 attempts with
one touchdown and two interceptions before being relieved in
the fourth quarter. He was also sacked six times. Brian Warden
(Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) rushed for 53
yards on 17 carries. John Rotter (Jr., Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale
HS) scored twice for the Auggies, on a six-yard pass in the second
quarter and on a one-yard run in the third period.
Augsburg's defense was led by Brent Peroutka (So.,
Faribault, Minn.), who had two interceptions for 86 return yards,
including a 69-yard return in the second quarter that set up
Augsburg's first touchdown of the game.
Rob Just (Sr., Farmington, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran
HS) led the Auggies with 11 tackles (eight solo), while Kurt
Werk (Jr., Herman, Minn./West Central Area HS) had 10 tackles
(seven solo).
The Auggies get back to action this Saturday (10/16) at 1
p.m., travelling to St. Paul to face Macalester at Macalester
Stadium. If you can't make it to the game, listen to all the
action live on KYCR-AM 1570.

Auggie
Volleyball (7-13 overall, 3-4 MIAC): Top Carleton, Gustavus
to start second half
With the toughest stretch of the season behind it and players
coming back from injuries, the Augsburg volleyball team has started
to come together in recent weeks. Over the past two weeks, the
Auggies have won two matches and dropped three, but all five
have featured strong performances that have the team looking
up for the rest of the season.
Possibly the team's best match of the season came on Sept.
29, when the Auggies dropped a five-game heartbreaker to MIAC
power St. Olaf, 13-15, 15-13, 15-4, 12-15, 15-11. Despite the
loss, the Auggies had one of their best games at the net in recent
years, with 13 blocks (four solo) as a team. Missy Carlson
(Sr., Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) led the way with 20
kills, 17 digs, three service aces and four blocks. Angie
Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) had 15 kills,
17 digs and six blocks (one solo). Jessica Ness (Sr.,
Cannon Falls, Minn.) had 11 kills, 19 digs and five blocks (three
solo), and Emily Walen (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) had 49 assists.
The Auggies followed that loss with an efficient one-hour,
three-game sweep of Carleton, 15-6, 15-6, 15-9 on Oct. 1. Carlson's
nine kills led the Auggies, with Adrianne Rieger (Sr.,
Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) adding seven. Tiffany
Lynch (Jr., Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) had 16 digs.
The next day, the Auggies dropped a 3-1 decision to MIAC contender
Macalester, 15-13, 15-9, 14-16, 15-10. Carlson's 18 kills led
the Augies, while Angie Rieger had 16 kills and 19 digs. Walen
contributed 53 assists.
On Oct. 6, the Auggies were swept at St. Thomas, 15-12, 15-1,
15-12. Angie Rieger and Carlson had eight kills, with Ness adding
five kills and 16 digs. After a week's layoff and some well-deserved
rest, the Auggies returned to action on Wednesday (10/13) with
a match at Gustavus. Augsburg had a strong performance in the
four-game match, winning 15-10, 10-15, 15-9, 15-7. Cassi Van
Ausdall (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.), in one of her first
matches in the front row after working her way back from an arm
injury, had 11 kills and 28 digs to pace the Auggie performance.
Angie Rieger led the way at the net with 17 kills and two blocks.
Walen had 50 assists in the match.
Augsburg looks to move over the .500 mark in the conference
standings with home matches this weekend, against St. Catherine
on Friday night (7:30 p.m.) and St. Mary's on Saturday (3 p.m.).

Auggie Men's
Golf: Van Rossum is MIAC medalist, Auggies third as a team
Kevin Van Rossum (Sr., Green Bay, Wis./Preble HS),
the lone senior on Augsburg's roster this year, has been the
shining star for Augsburg's men's golf team. The senior has been
a consistent star, and finished the fall half of the season with
two strong performances, including earning medalist honors at
the MIAC Men's Golf Championships Oct. 8-9 at Bunker Hills Golf
Course in Coon Rapids.
Van Rossum is the fourth Auggie golfer to ever win the MIAC
individual title, and the second in a row. Last year, Todd
Tourand earned co-medalist honors with J.P. Prenevost
of Gustavus. Van Rossum followed a first-round 76 with the
low round of the meet, 74, to capture the individual title by
one stroke with a 150 total.
As a team, Augsburg finished third in the two-day event with
a 315-317--632 total, 17 strokes from victor St. John's (310-305--615),
who wrested the title from perennial conference champ Gustavus
(314-313--627).
Robert Wagner (So., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) just missed
out on All-MIAC honors by one stroke, finishing 12th overall
with a 76-81--157. Augsburg's other three golfers all had identical
164 totals -- Hans Anderson (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.,
84-80), Sean Anderson (So., Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS,
81-83), and Marc Koehler (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn., 82-82).
The Auggies competed Oct. 2-4 at the Twin Cities Classic at
three area golf courses, hosted by Gustavus. Augsburg finished
11th in the 21-team competition, featuring both Division II and
III schools. Sean Anderson had the top individual performance
for the Auggies, with a three-day total of 86-75-78--239. Van
Rossum scored an 80-83-80--243 for Augsburg's second-best performance.
With the fall half of the season now over, the Auggies focus
on improvement in the spring half of the season. Head coach Brian
Ammann's crew hopes to return to the NCAA Division III national
tournament for the first time since a three-year run of appearances
from 1995-97.

Auggie
Men's/Women's Cross Country: Bloemendal keeps up strong performances
Augsburg's Eric Bloemendal (Jr., Huntsville, Ontario)
has had an impressive start to the 1999 season, with three straight
top-five finishes. On Oct. 2 at the Wartburg Invitational 8,000-meter
race, Bloemendal finished third with a 26:31 time. A week later,
at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational, Bloemendal
nearly matched his career-best time with a 26:27.5, fifth-place
finish.
At Eau Claire, Christian Dawson (So., Invercargill,
New Zealand/Cargill HS), in his first race of the year after
missing the first two with an injury, finished 10th overall in
26:42.3. Lawrence Mboga (So., Nairobi, Kenya/Men Yem Ya
HS) finished 42nd at Eau Claire (27:47.2) and 15th at Wartburg
(27:13). As a team, Augsburg finished seventh in the men's race
at the Eau Claire meet and had an incomplete team finish at Wartburg.
On the women's side, Augsburg placed third at a 3,000-meter
race in Wartburg, with Marit Thorsgard (So., Detroit Lakes,
Minn.) recording the top Auggie finish, 13:29 for 18th place.
Emily Nyre (Fr., Galesville, Wis./G-E-T HS) placed 20th
in 13:45 and Julie Peterson (Fr., Maplewood, Minn./North
St. Paul HS) placed 21st in 13:49. Chrissy Baune (So.,
Marshall, Minn.) was the only Auggie female runner to run in
the Wartburg 5,000-meter race, finishing fifth overall in 19:22,
her first-ever sub-20-minute performance at Augsburg.
A week later at Eau Claire, Baune again had a strong race
and another sub-20-minute performance, taking sixth overall in
19:23.1. Teresa Lewandowski (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) placed
16th overall in 20:00.4. As a team, Augsburg placed 13th overall
at Eau Claire.
Augsburg competes in one of the larger college cross country
meets in the Midwest, the Wisconsin-La Crosse Invitational, on
Saturday.

Auggie
Women's Soccer (2-12 overall, 1-6 MIAC): Auggies pick up
first two wins
After dropping three games to extend its losing streak to
11 games, there may have been questions about Augsburg matching
its one victory of a year ago in women's soccer. After all, a
9-0 loss to St. Benedict on Sept. 29 and a 7-0 loss to St. Thomas
on Oct. 2 are quite painful, and a close 2-0 defeat at Carleton
on Oct. 5 also hurts.
But, thanks to two straight victories, things are starting
to look up for an Auggie squad that, though low in numbers, has
shown strong improvement throughout the 1999 campaign. On Oct.
8, the Auggies finally broke the losing streak with a 1-0, double-overtime
win over Hamline at Anderson-Nelson Field. Kara Nelson (Fr.,
Detroit Lakes, Minn.) put home a corner kick from Sarah Verner
(Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) in the 105th minute to score the
win. Katie Cheese (So., Shakopee, Minn.) made 17 saves
in the net to score her first career shutout.
On Sunday, the Auggies claimed another 1-0 win, this time
over St. Scholastica. Anne Ducharme (Jr., Brooklyn Park,
Minn./Champlin Park HS) scored her first career goal three minutes
into the game, and the score held up behind a four-save performance
by Cheese. On Wednesday, a deep St. Olaf squad stopped the Auggies'
winning streak with a 4-0 decision. The Oles led 1-0 at halftime,
but pulled away with three goals in the final 30 minutes. Cheese
made 12 saves, as the Auggies were outshot 15-3.

Auggies
Men's Soccer (2-9 overall, 0-7 MIAC): MIAC losing skid continues
In a conference that's as tough as the MIAC is for men's soccer,
it can be tough to get on a winning streak. That's been the case
for Augsburg's men's soccer team, as the Auggies have lost their
last eight games in a row, including seven straight in conference
play.
On Oct. 2, the Auggies dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Thomas
at home. Brian Hesser (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS)
scored the first goal of his career for the Auggies, on an unassisted
tally in the second half. On Oct. 6, Carleton scored two goals
late in the second half to overcome a 1-0 Augsburg lead and claim
a 2-1 win. Scott Robertson (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo
HS) had the lone goal for the Auggies late in the first half.
Hamline scored a 4-1 win over the Auggies on Oct. 9. Eric
Roy (Sr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) had Augsburg's goal at the
55-minute mark of the game. The next day, St. Scholastica duplicated
the score, 4-1, over the Auggies in a nonconference match at
Anderson-Nelson Field. Emmanuel Kalu (Sr., Lagos, Nigeria/Federal
Government College) notched the first goal of his career late
in the game. St. Olaf, one of the top teams in the region, stopped
the Auggies 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon, controlling the action
from start to finish with a 60-2 shots-on-goal advantage.
The Auggies host the University of Mary on Friday at 7 p.m.
at Anderson-Nelson Field.
