Auggie
Football (4-3 overall, 3-3 MIAC): Auggies top Macalester,
fall to St. Thomas
Augsburg needed a spark to fire up its offense and break a
two-game losing streak. So Augsburg's coaches put John Goodale
(So., Buffalo, Minn.) in to make his first start at quarterback
against Macalester on Oct. 16. Goodale threw for 207 yards and
a touchdown, while running back Brian Warden (Sr., Minneapolis,
Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) scored three touchdowns, leading
Augsburg to a hard-fought, 27-7 win.
Goodale completed 17 of 28 passes, with one interception,
in leading the Auggies on offense in the victory. Meanwhile,
Warden recorded his third 100-plus yard rushing game of the season,
netting 143 yards on 28 carries. After John Rotter (Jr.,
Montgomery, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) opened the scoring
for the Auggies with an eight-yard touchdown reception from Goodale,
Warden scored the remaining Auggie touchdowns -- on an 11-yard
run early in the second quarter, on a 24-yard run early in the
third quarter and on an eight-yard run late in the period.
Augsburg put together a strong offensive game, compiling 374
yards of total offense (207 passing, 167 rushing). Meanwhile,
the Auggie defense stifled Macalester's hope of gaining its second
conference win in three weeks, by limiting the Scots to just
194 yards of total offense (113 passing, 81 rushing).
The Auggies picked off Macalester twice -- once by Brent
Peroutka (So., Faribault, Minn.) and once by Nate Loughran
(Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS), who notched his team-high
fifth interception of the season. In addition to the two interceptions,
the defense also forced two Scot fumbles.
Augsburg's defense combined for six quarterback sacks in the
game -- four from defensive lineman Matt Chappuis (So.,
Faribault, Minn.) and two from Jason Van Houten (Sr.,
Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS). Jake Kern (Sr., Faribault,
Minn.) and Mitchell Theisen (So., Waverly, Minn./Buffalo
HS) led the Auggies with six tackles (five solo) apiece.
A week later, the Auggies played host to St. Thomas, and the
Auggies were gracious hosts, giving the Tommies six turnovers
-- five fumbles and one interception. Four of the six Augsburg
turnovers eventually led to St. Thomas scores in the 30-20 Tommie
win. The Tommies eventually built a 30-7 lead before Augsburg
scored twice late in the fourth period.
The Tommies used a balanced offensive attack and strong defense
to score the victory. St. Thomas outgained the Auggies by a 371-331
margin, though the Tommie defense limited Augsburg to just 11
net rushing yards in the game. St. Thomas had an incredible 58
rushing attempts for 230 yards, to go with 141 passing yards.
Augsburg's lone score in the first half came after a blocked
punt by Kern, his second of the season, which Chad Olson
(Sr., Farmington, Minn.) recovered in the end zone with 1:58
remaining in the first quarter.
The Auggies couldn't score again until the final three minutes
of the game, when quarterback Goodale threw two touchdown passes.
He had an eight-yard pass to Ryan Hupka (Jr., Thunder
Bay, Ontario/St. Patrick's HS) with 3:03 left and an 82-yard
pass to Damien Rochon-Washington (Jr., Chicago, Ill./Kenwood
Academy) with 1:31 left. An onside kick attempt failed by the
Auggies.
Warden had with 45 rushing yards on 15 carries. Rochon-Washington
had 130 receiving yards on three catches, and Sam Gross
(Fr., Springfield, Minn.) caught three passes for 78 yards. Augsburg's
defense was paced by Loughran, who had 13 tackles (10 solo).
Kern had 12 tackles (nine solo) and Joe Souba (Jr., Hayward,
Wis.) and Chappuis had nine tackles apiece.
Augsburg hosts Carleton in its last home game this season
at Anderson-Nelson Field on Saturday at 1 p.m. If you can't make
it to the game, listen to all the action live on KYCR-AM 1570.

Auggie
Volleyball (9-15 overall, 5-6 MIAC): Upset of Bethel highlights
recent performances
It's been an up and down last two weeks for Augsburg's volleyball
team, as they continue to hover around the .500 mark as the MIAC
tournament approaches.
The Auggies faced St. Catherine on Oct. 15 and, as expected,
rolled over the Wildcats in three straight games, 15-9, 15-11,
15-13. Head coach Thanh Pham was able to play nearly his
entire varsity roster in the match, as 14 Auggies saw game action.
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS)
led the Auggies with 12 kills, while Paula Pogatchnik (Fr.,
Finlayson, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) had seven kills. Tiffany
Lynch (Jr., Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) had 22 assists
in the victory.
A day later, the Auggies played host to St. Mary's University,
a team close to the Auggies in the MIAC race for tournament seeding.
It was a back-and-forth, marathon struggle, one that the visiting
Cardinals prevailed in five games -- 15-10, 11-15, 18-20, 15-13,
18-16. Angie Rieger had an incredible match from the middle position,
recording 20 kills, 24 digs, six blocks (three solo) and five
service aces. Cassi Van Ausdall (Jr., White Bear Lake,
Minn.) also shined, notching 15 kills to go with a season-high
35 digs. Emily Walen (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) scored 61
assists, a season high, to go with three blocks (one solo) and
11 digs. Jessica Ness (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) had 14
kills.
On Oct. 20, the Auggies traveled to Arden Hills to take on
Bethel, a team that had lost just one MIAC match to that point.
The Auggies gave Bethel MIAC loss No. 2 with a convincing five-game
victory -- 15-11, 15-10, 5-15, 13-15, 15-12. The upset victory
over the Royals was a solid all-around effort for Augsburg's
veterans, as five players scored in double digits in kills. Walen
again had 61 assists to continue her strong first season as Augsburg's
setter.
Missy Carlson (Sr., Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS)
continued to shine for the Auggies, and led the way with 17 kills,
13 digs and three blocks (one solo). Angie Rieger notched 16
kills, 15 digs and four blocks (two solo), and her sister, Adrianne
Rieger (Sr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) had 15 kills
and 11 digs. Ness had 13 kills and 17 digs, and Van Ausdall contributed
10 kills and 27 digs. Winter had 16 digs and three service aces
from her back-row position.
On Wednesday night, the Auggies finished MIAC regular-season
play with a match at Hamline. Augsburg jumped out in front with
the first two game victories -- 18-16 and 15-13 (rallying from
a 9-1 deficit), but could not get the match-ending third win,
as the host Pipers came from behind to win the final three games
15-12, 15-12 and 15-10. Augsburg finished MIAC play with a 5-6
conference mark.
Ness led the Auggies with 11 kills, four service aces and
19 digs, while Angie Rieger had 10 kills and eight blocks (three
solo). Van Ausdall had 10 kills and 31 digs, and Adrianne Rieger
had 10 kills. Walen scored 30 set assists, with Laura Winter
(So., Blaine, Minn.) contributing 13 assists.
Augsburg wraps up the regular season with a nonconference
match against Concordia-St. Paul on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at
Si Melby Hall. The MIAC tournament is Nov. 5-6 at Macalester.

Men's/Women's Cross Country: Plenty of personal bests at
La Crosse
It was a day for personal bests for Augsburg's men's and women's
cross country teams in La Crosse, Wis., on Oct. 16. All five
Auggie men's runners recorded collegiate personal bests in the
Wisconsin-La Crosse Jim Drews Maroon race, and two Auggie women
had collegiate personal bests in the UW-LC Tori Neubauer Maroon
race. Both races are considered among the most competitive collegiate
cross country events in the Midwest. Augsburg's men finished
25th with a 697 score, while the women placed 24th with a 706
mark.
The highlight of the races was the performance of Chrissy
Baune (So., Marshall, Minn.), who blistered her previous
personal best by 19 seconds to finish the women's 5,000-meter
race in a 19:03.1, 20th-place overall finish. In each of Baune's
three races this year, she's been able to break the 20-minute
mark, placing her among the top women's runners in the MIAC.
Also a strong candidate for All-MIAC honors on the women's
side will be Teresa Lewandowski (Jr., Hastings, Minn.),
who ran a season-best 19:34.6 to finish 53rd overall. It's the
second time in her collegiate career that she's been able to
break the 20-minute mark in a 5,000-meter event. The other three
Auggie runners placed close to each other -- Jaime Kingsley
(Jr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) in 23:34.3, Julie
Peterson (Jr., Maplewood, Minn./North St. Paul HS) in a career
best 23:40.0 and Marit Thorsgard (So., Detroit Lakes,
Minn.) in 23:54.3.
On the men's side, Eric Bloemendal (Jr., Huntsville,
Ontario) continued his strong season with another personal best,
this time a 26:22.7 mark to finish 58th overall in the men's
8,000-meter race. An All-MIAC finisher last year, Bloemendal's
time was the 10th best among MIAC runners at the La Crosse race.
Christian Dawson (So., Invercargill, New Zealand/Cargill
HS), running in just his second race of the year after missing
the first two with an injury, also had a career-best performance
with a 26:38.5, 90th-place finish. An honorable-mention All-MIAC
performer last year, he has a shot of cracking the top 15 at
the MIAC meet to earn all-conference honors this weekend.
The men's personal bests continued with Lawrence Mboga's
(So., Nairobi, Kenya/Men Yem Ya HS) 27:08.9 time, as did
Albert Nymari (Fr., Kissi, Kenya) in 30:18.1 and Matt
Swords (Jr., Fridley, Minn./Blaine HS) in 31:05.8.
Augsburg hopes to keep the PBs rolling at the MIAC Championships
this Saturday at Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul. The men's
squad finished ninth last season and have a shot at a top-five
team finish this year with some solid performances. The women's
squad placed 11th last year, and could move up in the team standings
as well.

Auggies
Men's Soccer (3-11 overall, 0-8 MIAC): Win over Wisconsin-Superior
Augsburg has had three games over the past two weeks, and
was finally able to break a nine-game losing streak with an impressive
nonconference win.
On Oct. 15, the Auggies suffered a disappointing 1-0 home
loss to the University of Mary (N.D.), rated among the top teams
in the nation in the NAIA polls. Augsburg held the game scoreless
for most of the evening, but the Marauders scored past goalie
Gustavo Qunitiliano (Jr., Brasilia, Brazil/Mound-Westonka
HS) with just under 10 minutes remaining to claim the victory.
Augsburg was outshot 11-4 in a losing effort.
Two days later, the Auggies traveled to Superior, Wis., and
broke the losing streak with a 4-1 win over Wisconsin-Superior.
Dan Walker (So., Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area HS) scored
twice for the Auggies, whiel Eric Roy (Sr., Coon Rapids,
Minn.) had a goal and two assists. Carlos Martinez (Jr.,
Bogota, Colombia/Hopkins HS) had the other goal for the Auggies.
Morgan Davidsen (Sr., Holen, Norway) made 11 saves to
pick up the win.
The winning streak couldn't be held, however, on Oct. 20,
when the Auggies dropped a 7-0 decision to conference foe Concordia-Moorhead.
The Cobbers put five goals on the board in the first half and
held on for the shutout, limiting the Auggies to just seven shots
on goal. Hugo Quintiliano (Fr., Brasilia, Brazil/Mound-Westonka
HS) had three of Augsburg's shots.
Augsburg has its last home game of the season on Thursday
at 7 p.m. against St. Mary's at Anderson-Nelson Field, and closes
the season Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gustavus.

Auggie
Women's Soccer (2-13 overall, 1-7 MIAC): Auggies drop close
loss to Cobbers
Augsburg came close to notching its second conference win
of the year and third overall, but could not get enough scoring
opportunities in a 2-0 loss to Concordia-Moorhead on Oct. 20
at Anderson-Nelson Field.
The Auggies played a strong defensive game, keeping the game
scoreless for most of the action. But the Cobbers scored twice
in the last 10 minutes of play to seal the win. Goalkeeper Katie
Cheese (So., Shakopee, Minn.) made eight saves in a losing
effort, as the Auggies were outshot by a 10-3 margin. Brenda
Selander (Jr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS), Kara Nelson
(Fr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Sarah Verner (Sr.,
Minnetonka, Minn.) had shots for the Auggies.
Augsburg has its last home game of the season on Thursday
at 5:30 p.m. against St. Mary's at Anderson-Nelson Field, and
closes the season Saturday at 3 p.m. at Gustavus. The game has
been moved from Augsburg to Gustavus, a change from earlier schedules.
