Augsburg's Royce Winford named to D3Football.com All-West Region first team

Royce WinfordMINNEAPOLIS (11/20/07) -- Augsburg College wide receiver Royce Winford (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) was named to the All-West Region first team by D3Football.com, a national website that covers NCAA Division III football, on Monday.

Winford set a single-season school record with 16 receiving touchdowns, while becoming the first Auggie since 1998 to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. He caught 101 passes for 1,403 yards, the second-most receptions and receiving yards in a single season in school history. He had seven 100-yard-plus receiving yardage games this season, including three straight games with 200 or more receiving yards midway through the season. In Augsburg's 38-16 victory over Carleton on Oct. 20, Winford set a team and MIAC single-game record with 20 receptions, a total that is tops among all NCAA football players, regardless of division, this season.

His 10.1 receptions per-game currently stand second-best among all NCAA Division III receivers, and his 140.3 receiving yards per-game and 1,403 receiving yards both currently stand third-best among all Division III receivers and are tops among all MIAC receivers in overall play. He also stands 20th among Division III players in scoring (9.6 points per-game). In league games-only, his 89 receptions (11.1 per-game) and 1,189 yards (148.6 per-game) were both tops among all MIAC receivers.

Among all college football receivers (all NCAA divisions and NAIA) this season (through games of Dec. 8, see below), Winford's 10.1 receptions per game rank sixth-highest nationally, while his 140.3 receiving yards per-game rank fifth-highest nationally and his 1,403 receiving yards rank seventh-highest nationally.

In 28 career games, Winford has 154 catches (fourth-most in school history) for 2,143 yards (fourth-most in school history) and 24 receiving touchdowns (third-most in school history).

Under third-year head coach Frank Haege, the Auggie football team finished 5-5 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play this season, marking the first time Augsburg had reached the .500 mark since 2003 (5-5 overall, 4-4 MIAC). With its five victories this season, Augsburg also eclipsed its number of wins from the previous three seasons combined (4-26).
