Augsburg's Jordan Berg named as regional finalist for Gagliardi Trophy as outstanding Division III football student-athlete GAGLIARDI TROPHY WEBSITE -- CLICK HERE
Berg was named as one of 10 finalists for the award in November, and he was chosen as the West Region finalist, representing one of the four regions in NCAA Division III football, on Thursday. Hartwick (N.Y.) quarterback Jason Boltus was named as the East Region finalist, Millsaps (Miss.) quarterback Juan Joseph was named as the South Region finalist, and Mount Union (Ohio) quarterback Greg Micheli was named as the North Region finalist. The Gagliardi Trophy, named for legendary St. John's University football coach John Gagliardi, has been presented by the St. John's J-Club and Jostens, Inc., since 1993, and is widely recognized as the premier individual award in Division III football, honoring excellence in athletics, academics and community service. The award-winner will be announced next Tuesday, and will be honored next Thursday in Salem, Va., as part of the festivities leading up to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl (Division III national championship game) on Dec. 20.
Berg completed 297-of-499 passes for 3,226 yards and 25 touchdowns against just 14 interceptions this season, the completion total a single-season school record. Each of the other passing totals were the second-most in a single season in school history, behind his numbers from 2007. Nationally, Berg stands second among Division III quarterbacks in completions per-game (29.70), fourth in passing yardage per-game (322.60), ninth in total passing yardage (3,226), ninth in total offense yardage per-game (314.2) and 22nd in points responsible for per-game (17.00). Berg led the MIAC in passing yardage per-game and total offense in both overall (322.6, 314.2) and conference games-only (333.4, 320.6). This season, Berg was named first-team All-MIAC, his second all-conference honor, after being named second-team All-MIAC in 2007. He was also named to the D3football.com All-West Region second team this week. In November, he was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team. A physics major with a 3.80 grade-point average, he was an Academic All-MIAC honoree last season, and will be named to the honor again this year when the awards are announced in the spring. He is a team co-captain. In addition to his athletic and academic credentials, Berg has served as a volunteer at local food shelves and a volunteer coach at youth basketball camps. He took part in a mission trip to Benton Harbor, Mich., to volunteer at a local Boys and Girls Club and help refurbish and paint homes of people in need. He has volunteered for Adopt-a-Highway trash pickup efforts, as well as park cleanup for Earth Day. He has taken part in Christmas caroling with a church group at an area nursing home/Heritage House, and has worked as a volunteer teacher's assistant with elementary physical education classes.
Nominations for the Gagliardi Trophy are made by college presidents with supporting letters and credentials provided by head football coaches. After screening the nominations, the SJU J-Club Board of Directors narrows the field to 10 finalists, including at least one finalist in each of the four NCAA region. The 35-member Gagliardi Trophy national selection committee reviews the credentials, ranks the candidates 1-10 and casts their votes. Fans were also able to vote for their favorite players via the D3football.com website, with the fans receiving one collective vote. The Gagliardi Trophy will be presented in Salem, Va., site of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl (Division III national championship game), on Dec. 18. Through its commitment to college athletics and the Gagliardi Trophy, Jostens brings the award recipient and his coach to the presentation banquet. It is the third time that an Augsburg football player has been a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy. In 1998, wide receiver Scott Hvistendahl won the award, and in 1997, quarterback Derrin Lamker was named as a finalist.
