Augsburg College

Augsburg Sports Week Jan. 13-19

Augsburg Sports Week

(Jan. 13-19)

Women's basketball- Auggies grab first conference win of season

The Augsburg women's basketball team picked up its first conference win of the season last week with an 88-81 victory against St. Mary's. The win boosted the Auggies' record to 1-8 in conference play and 2-11 overall.

Against Concordia, however, the Auggies weren't able to come up with a repeat performance as they fell to the visiting Cobbers 81-54 on Saturday afternoon. Forward Tara Oseland (Jr., Brainerd, Minn.) had a double-double for the Auggies, leading them in scoring, with 19 points, and in rebounds, with 14.

Against St. Mary's, the duo of Oseland and Stefanie Lodermeier (Jr., Goodhue, Minn.) was unstopable. Each poured in 29 points, which was more than half the team's scoring. Lodermeier added 13 rebounds while Oseland chipped in nine. Andria Meskan (Jr., New Prague, Minn.) also was in double figures with 13 points. Oseland averaged 23.3 points, 11 rebounds and 37 minutes per game in three contests last week.

Wrestling - Team beaten for first time this season in a dual

Augsburg suffered its first dual meet loss of the year last weekend at the hands of Division II Ohio University. Ohio beat the Auggies 23-15 in the first round of the UNI Duals at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Augsburg bounced back with a vengeance however by trouncing Wyoming, a division I team, 34-8, and then beating the University of Central Oklahoma 36-6. UCO is ranked #2 in NCAA Division II. Henry Gerten (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.), a 118 pounder, kept his record unblemished going 3-0 on the day. Gerten now has a 25-0 record. Tony Quance (Fr., Stillwater, Minn./ Tontino Grace) also had an impressive day in his varsity debut. Quance was 2-1, with two pins.

Earlier in the week, Augsburg, ranked #1 in the NCAA Division III, defeated St. Cloud State University 32-9 at home. The Auggies, now have a 7-1 dual meet record, and travel to Bismark this weekend for the University of Mary Tournament.

Augsburg has several wreslters ranked at or near the top of division III wrestling. Gerten is No. 3 at 118, Josh Cagle (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) is No. 5 at 134, Wade Johnson (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) is No. 3 at 142, Justin Hahn (Sr., Forest Lake, Minn.) is No. 6 at 158, Jim Peterson (So., Eyota, Minn.) is No. 2 at 167, Dan Lewandowski (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) is No. 1 at 190, and heavyweight John Pena (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) is No. 5.

Men's basketball - Auggies get big win at home

Improved shooting and staying out of foul trouble were big keys in Augsburg's 83-77 win over Concordia last weekend. Augsburg made 12 of 16 free throws in the first half, while Concordia didn't even make it to the line. Augsburg connected on nine three-pointers during the game, including four by Devean George (So., Minneapolis/Benilde-St. Margaret's). George, who is the MIAC's leading scorer, put in 35 points for the Auggies. Guard Kevin Van Rossum (Fr., Green Bay, Wis.) added 14 points for the Auggies, including a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line. Center Kevin Crerand (Sr., Green Bay, Wis.) lead the Auggies in rebounding with 10.

Earlier in the week, the Auggies lost in Winona to previously winless St. Mary's University 69-56. The Auggies' record now stands at 5-5 in the MIAC and 8-6 overall, but more importantly, the win over Concordia snaps a four-game losing streak and keeps the team in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Men's Hockey - Sweep of Hamline gets Auggies back in the hunt

The men's hockey team started the weekend in a big way with a 13-3 drubbing of Hamline at the Augsburg Ice Arena on Friday night. Augsburg, which led 5-1 after one period, was never threatened in the game as goaltender Shawn Mullan (So., Littleton, Col.) stopped 38 of 41 shots to record the win.

Forward Martin Hlinka (So., Farmington, Minn), forward Mike LeDuc (Sr., Osoyoos, British Columbia), forward Todd Cary (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.), forward Brandon Thomas (So., Albert Lea, Minn.), and forward Chad Vukich (Sr., Chisholm, Minn.) each scored two goals for the Auggies.

The next night at Hamline, Augsburg was again victorious, but the winning margin was much closer at 6-5. Cary again had two goals for the Auggies in the victory. The wins improved the Auggies to 4-4 in the conference, and 7-7-1 overall.

Women's Hockey - Auggies clobber club teams

Augsburg clobbered two club hockey opponents last week. First, the Auggie traveled to St. Paul, where they faced St. Thomas/St. Kate's and the team came away with a 19-1 rout. The Auggies finished off the week with a 16-0 win over visiting UW-Eau Claire.

Against UST/St. Kates, Augsburg had a 60-3 shots on goal advantage, including a 21-0 advantage in the second period. Annie Simons (FY, South St. Paul, Minn.) led the scoring barrage with five goals. Lynda Robinson (So., St. John, New Brunswick) had the hat trick. Augsburg stands at 11-4-1 overall.
