Augsburg College

Augsburg Sports Week May 27

Augsburg Sports Week

(May 27, 1997)

Larssen, Simones compete at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field competition

Augsburg College was respresented at last week's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field competition by senior sprinter Astrid Larssen (Oslo, Norway) and junior distance runner Stephanie Simones (Minneapolis, Minn.).

Larssen qualified in the 100- and 200-meter competition and Simones ran in the 10,000 meters. Simones finished 14th of 15 in the finals with a time of 37:48.57. Ironically, her time was identical to what she ran in the MIAC competition earlier this month. Coach Dennis Barker said that the field was tough because in most years her time would probably have placed her in the top ten. Larssen did not qualify for the finals in either of her events, but again, Barker pointed out that the field was tough from top to bottom this year.

Lewandowski, Ormsby named senior honor athletes for 1997

Augsburg College recently selected Dan Lewandowski as its male senior honor athlete and Rebekah Ormsby as its female senior honor athlete for 1996-97. Both Lewandowski, a Hastings native, and Ormsby, a Pine Island native, were all-americans on the field and in the classroom.

Lewandowski, a 3.48 computer science major, was a two-time national wrestling champion at 190 pounds. He wrestled in four national tournaments, twice on team champions, and was a three-time all-American. This past season, Lewandowski was selected to the second team of the GTE/CoSida academic All-American team. He is 11th all-time at Augsburg with 126 career wins and only one of two wrestlers to win back-to-back titles.

Ormsby, a 3.84 chemistry/history major, became the school's first cross country all-American in her junior season when she finished 10th in the NCAA meet. This past season she qualified for the NCAA race but was unable to compete because of injury. In track, she is the holder of several school records and a four-time all-MIAC competitor. She is equally popular in the classroom, as is evidenced by her dean's list marks every semester of her college career. Ormsby volunteers her time with several community and campus organizations.

Three Auggies named Academic All-Conference

Augsburg College had three of its spring athletes selected to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference team. The team, which is voted on by MIAC sports information directors, includes 25 men and 25 women. Augsburg was represented by Andy Small (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) on the men's team and by Stephanie Simones (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Tara Cesaretti (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) on the women's team.

Small, an outfielder on the baseball team, is a History major with a 3.72 GPA. He was second on the Auggies with a .317 batting average this past season. Cesaretti, a captain on the women's tennis team, is a Pre-law major with a 3.8 GPA. She advanced to the consolation finals at No. 2 doubles in the MIAC Tournament. Simones, a cross country runner and track standout, is an Elementary Education major with a 3.47 GPA. She participated in NCAA competition in both sports this year, including a 14th-place finish at last week's outdoor track and field meet in La Crosse, Wis.

To be considered for the Academic All-Conference award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with more than a 3.2 GPA and must be a contributor to his or her athletic team.
