Hockey second team
MINNEAPOLIS - Augsburg College men's hockey players Todd Cary
and Ryan McIntosh were named to the 1998 TITAN/American Hockey Coaches
Association All-American second team Tuesday.
Cary, a senior forward from Indianapolis, Ind. (Indianapolis
Lutheran HS), and McIntosh, a freshman goalie from Calgary, Alberta
(Bishop Grandin HS), helped lead the Auggies to the Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference regular-season co-championship, MIAC playoff championship
and a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Division III national playoffs.
Cary had team highs of 23 goals, 27 assists and 50 points on
the season, and tied a school record with three hat tricks on the year.
Cary finished his four-year Augsburg career with 125 points (59
goals, 66 assists) in 97 games.
McIntosh, the only freshman among the 24 players earning All-America
honors, finished his first Auggie season with a 14-2-3 record, .917 save
percentage and 3.24 goals-against average. McIntosh won 12 games
in a row in net during a late-season Augsburg rush to the NCAA playoffs
and NCAA
Final Four. The run included a 14-game Auggie winning streak and a
18-1-1 record in 20 games leading up to the Final Four.
The duo bring the list of Augsburg All-Americans to 26 in the 70-year
history of the Auggie men's hockey program. The All-American Team is voted
on by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) in NCAA Divisions
II and III and is sponsored by Titan.
Augsburg was one of seven teams to receive at least two All-America
honorees. Four-time consecutive national champion Middlebury (Vermont)
had the most All-America selections, three.
Among other MIAC teams, St. John's senior defenseman Tryg Sarsland and
St. Thomas sophomore forward Steve Aronson were named first-team All-America,
while St. John's senior forward Matt Erredge was named to the second team.
Aronson scored 32 goals and had 25 assists for 57 points during the 1997-98
season. Sarsland, the MIAC Most Valuable Player, completed the 1997-98
season with 13 goals and 37 assists for 50 points, while Erredge led
the Johnnies in goals with 33, total points with 60, game-winning goals
