What is Sports Medicine?

By Steve Ahlvers, former Augsburg assistant athletic trainer (2002-04)
Sports Medicine is a general term which includes all professions that work closely with the athletically active population. These professions include: athletic training, orthopaedic surgeons, cardiac rehabilitation, occupational therapy, physical therapy, exercise physiology and much more.

Augsburg's Sports Medicine program prepares its students for all of these professions, especially Athletic Training and Physical Therapy. Athletic Trainers deal more with the on-field/court prevention, evaluation, care and rehabilitation of an athlete's injury. Physical Therapists tend to work with the off-field evaluation, care and rehabilitation of the athlete's injury.

Athletic Trainers work falls into five domains:
1. Prevention of athletic injuries
2. Recognition, evaluation and immediate care of athletic injuries
3. Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries
4. Health care administration
5. Professional development and responsibility

A typical day for an Athletic Trainer usually begins about an hour before a practice or a game starts. They are usually one of the first ones there. During this time, the Athletic Trainer takes care of pre-event items. These include: giving treatments to athletes (i.e. ice, heat, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, etc.); monitoring rehabilitation; taping ankles, wrists, etc.; preparing supplies needed during the event such as extra tape, bandages, splints, crutches, water, etc. and re-evaluating injuries to determine return to play.

During the contest is usually considered somewhat of a "down time." This is the Athletic Trainer's time to watch the event, but must always be ready in the event an athlete gets hurt. If an athlete were to go down, the Athletic Trainer would evaluate the injury as soon as possible and provide the proper treatment for that injury.

After the practice or game is another busy time. Here Athletic Trainers again provide treatment, evaluate injuries, monitor more rehabilitation, restock supplies that were used and put away items that were taken out. They also complete evaluation forms for injuries that occurred and update athlete charts to see their progress.

Athletic Trainers have many more responsibilities, including administrative responsibilities such as teaching classes, supervising students, taking care of insurance, budgeting, supplies and more.
