ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/1/08) -- The Augsburg College volleyball team picked up a five-set victory over Macalester College at the Leonard Center in St. Paul, as the Auggies picked up their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season. Game scores were 25-22, 14-25, 26-24, 18-25, 15-12 in favor of the Auggies (10-8 overall, 1-3 MIAC).

In the first set, the Auggies came out strong posting an 8-2 lead sparked by a pair of kills from Katie Christensen (SO, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS). Aggressive serving by Macalester and a few hitting errors by Augsburg brought the score to 15-14, in favor of the Auggies. Both teams traded points back and forth until a kill by Breann Woelfel (JR, Annandale, Minn.) sealed the 25-22 victory for Augsburg.

The second set began completely opposite of the first with Macalester jumping out to the early 10-2 lead. Augsburg had trouble finding their rhythm offensively and dropped the set 25-14.

Augsburg held a narrow 3-2 lead in the third set before Macalester was able to put together a few runs and gain a 21-14 lead over the Auggies. Augsburg's Dani Tanaka (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) took the game into her hands and rattled off eight consecutive serves to tie things up at 22-22. Both teams had errors that led to another tie score at 24-24. A kill by Julie Jenkins (SR, Edina, Minn.) gave the Auggies the momentum they needed to pull out the 26-24, come-from-behind victory.

In the fourth set, both teams were playing very evenly matched volleyball. Augsburg's Jenkins, Christensen, Woelfel and Amanda Rueb (SR, Plymouth, Minn./West Lutheran HS) all recorded two or more kills in the way to a 14-14 tie. Macalester used strong serving and powerful hitting to distance themselves from the Auggies as they pulled away claiming the 25-19 fourth set win.

The deciding fifth set found the Auggies with a 7-0 lead gained by strong serving from Shanna Reed (JR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and three kills by Woelfel. Macalester countered with a run of their own and brought the score within one at 10-9. The Auggies were able to regain their composure and take advantage of their blocking abilities to pull away with the 15-12 victory.

For the match, the Auggies had a trio of hitters in double figures. Leading the way was Woelfel with 14, Christensen with 13 and Jenkins with 10. Augsburg also had a trio of defensive players recording double-digit digs in the match. Tanaka led all players with 24 digs, while Jessica Hilk (SO, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) recorded 16. Jenkins posted 12 digs, making tonight's match her second kill-dig double-double in the past week. Reed led the Auggies in assists with 37.

Macalester (4-10 overall, 0-4 MIAC) was led by Sonia Muzikarova and Majra Mucic, who recorded 19 and 16 kills respectively. Danielle Dweck led the Scots with 39 assists.

The Auggies' next action will be another key MIAC matchup against rival Hamline University on Friday (10/3) at 7 p.m. in St. Paul.
