MINNEAPOLIS (10/7/08) -- The Augsburg College volleyball team dropped a three-set Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to No. 14-ranked Concordia College-Moorhead. Game scores were 25-19, 25-17, 25-20 in favor of the Cobbers (12-2 overall, 5-1 MIAC).

Concordia took advantage of early hitting errors by Augsburg (10-10 overall, 1-5 MIAC) to claim an early 10-3 lead in the first set. The Auggies would rally back, sparked by kills from Katie Christensen (SO, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), Julie Jenkins (SR, Edina, Minn.) and Dani Boner (JR, Omaha, Neb./Mercy HS) which forced a Concordia timeout at 16-13. Strong blocking by the Cobbers, combined with a few attacking errors by Augsburg, proved to be the difference in the second half of the set as Concordia pulled away with the 25-19 win.

The Auggies took the quick 2-0 lead to start the second set, but Concordia bounced back to tie things up at 4-4. Both teams played even volleyball through the middle of the set. A big kill by Breann Woelfel (JR, Annandale, Minn.) and a service ace by Amanda Rueb (SR, Plymouth, Minn./West Lutheran HS) brought the score to 15-16 in favor of Concordia.  The Cobbers would then go on a run that the Auggies couldn't slow down, as Concordia went on to claim the 25-17, second-set victory.

Concordia jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the third set, but the Auggies switched to a 6-2 offense and appeared to gain some momentum. Kills by Christensen and Melissa Larsen (JR, Andover, Minn.) would force the Cobbers to take a timeout, bringing the score to 22-20 in favor of Concordia. The Cobbers were able to regroup after the timeout and went on to win 25-20.

For the match, Augsburg (10-10 overall, 1-5 MIAC) was led by Christensen with eight kills and Woelfel with six kills. Defensively, the Auggies had three players finish with double-digit digs -- Dani Tanaka (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) led the Auggies with 21 digs, while Christensen and Jessica Hilk (SO, Waconia, Minn./Mayer Lutheran HS) recorded 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

Concordia (12-2 overall, 5-1 MIAC) was led by Katie Vohnoutka with 11 kills and 16 digs. Defensively, Jenna Green paced the Cobbers with 21 digs, while also recording nine kills in the match.

The Augsburg volleyball team will next be in action on Friday and Saturday (10/7-10/8), when they travel to Wisconsin for the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Tournament which will begin on Friday at 3 p.m. with a match against Viterbo (Wis.).
