MINNEAPOLIS (2/12/03) -- Sara
Erickson (Sr., Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) led all scorers with
19 points, as St. Olaf College used a second-half run to claim a 66-47 triumph
over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
women's basketball game Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
St. Olaf outscored Augsburg
33-14 in the second half to score the win and improve to 6-15 overall, 6-13
in MIAC play. Augsburg drops to 4-18 overall and 3-16 in MIAC play, losing its
12th game in a row.
The game was tied 33-33 at halftime,
but the Oles used an 18-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half to
build a commanding 14-point lead, 51-37 with 10:21 left. St. Olaf stretched
the advantage to as many as 22 points in the second half.
Hitting 43.3 percent (13-of-30)
from the field in the first half, Augsburg was limited to just 17.9 percent
shooting (5-of-28) in the second half. Meanwhile, St. Olaf was consistent the
whole game, hitting 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field. Both teams hit six
3-point baskets in the game.
Augsburg committed 19 turnovers,
the 15th time this season Augsburg has committed 19 or more miscues. St. Olaf
turned the turnovers into 21 points in the game.
Erickson hit three 3-pointers,
as did Liz Mundahl (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) for the Oles, who scored 13 points.
Both Erickson and Mundahl had three steals each. Molly Simon (So., Hudson,
Wis.) came off the bench to score 16 points and pull down six rebounds.
Augsburg was led by Katie
Kelsey (So., Burnsville, Minn.), who had 11 points and 13 rebounds for her
first career double-double. Ashley Vossen (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Central
HS) matched a season high with 10 points. Missy Larson (Fr., Pine Island,
Minn.), in her first collegiate start, had eight points.
Augsburg started a virtually
brand new starting lineup on Wednesday in hopes of breaking the month-long losing
streak, starting three freshmen.
Both teams return to action
on Saturday (2/15) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg playing at St. Mary's and St. Olaf
hosting Macalester.
