MINNEAPOLIS
(1/13/01) -- Kate Deschneau (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds
View HS) scored the game-winning goal 38 seconds into overtime,
giving Gustavus Adolphus College a 2-1 victory over Augsburg College
in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey
game Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Deschneau's
goal, on a scramble in front of the net off assists from Jess
Brandanger (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Nikki
Norton (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.), gave the Gusties their
first-ever series sweep of Augsburg. Gustavus improved to 9-2
overall and 8-2 in the MIAC with the victory, while Augsburg drops
to 4-8 overall and 4-6 in MIAC play. It was just the fourth win
for Gustavus in the 11-game varsity all-time series with the Auggies.
The Auggies
took a 1-0 lead on a Carrie McCarville (Sr., Hopkins, Minn./Benilde-St.
Margaret HS) goal with 1:34 remaining in the first period. Amber
Nadreau (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian HS) and Laura
McGowan (Jr., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) had assists
on McCarville's goal.
The Auggies
held onto the lead through most of the game, thanks to an outstanding
effort in goal from Auggie goalie Katie Fedoryk (Fr., Austin,
Minn.), who made 53 saves. Gustavus outshot Augsburg 55-26 in
the contest. On the weekend, Fedoryk made 96 saves and allowed
six goals.
The Gusties
tied the game at the 7:59 mark of the third period, when Sarah
Moe (Jr., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) scored on an assist
from Kenzie Stensland (So., Stillwater, Minn.). It was
Moe's (formerly Sarah Garrison) second game against her former
Auggie teammates; Moe played her freshman year at Gustavus, transferred
to Augsburg last year and transferred back to Gustavus this season.
The game was
played largely in the Augsburg end, with the Auggie defense claiming
numerous stops on Gustie attacks. Molly O'Donnell (Fr.,
Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) made 25 saves to score the win in
goal for the Gusties.
Augsburg returns
to MIAC action with a two-game series against Bethel. Thursday's
(1/18) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, and Saturday's
(1/20) contest is at the Columbia Ice Arena in Fridley, Minn.
Gustavus returns to action with a two-game series against St.
Olaf. Saturday's game is at Don Roberts Rink in St. Peter, Minn.,
at 7:05 p.m., and Sunday's (1/21) game is at 8 p.m. at the Northfield,
Minn., Ice Arena.
