MINNEAPOLIS
(2/3/01) -- Tomery Stolz (Fr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored
the game-winning goal on an empty-net shot with 19 seconds remaining
in regulation Saturday, giving the University of St. Thomas a
2-1 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference women's hockey game at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg, facing
virtual elimination from qualifying for the four-team MIAC postseason
playoffs without a win over the Tommies, pulled goalie Katie
Fedoryk (Fr., Austin, Minn.) in the final minute of the third
period, with the game tied at 1-1. Stolz scored the empty-net
tally, on assists from Kara Trygestad (Fr., Minneapolis,
Minn./Edison HS) and Erica Buck (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.).
Augsburg, the
defending MIAC champions and defending Division III national runner-up,
falls to 8-10-0 overall and 6-8-0 in the MIAC with the loss, and
will be eliminated from contention for the conference playoffs
with one win by both Gustavus Adolphus College and the College
of St. Catherine in their remaining league games, based on conference
playoff tiebreaker criteria. St. Thomas improves to 14-5-1 overall
and 10-3-1 in the MIAC, sweeping the Auggies for the first time
in its program's history.

(Sr.,
Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) opened the scoring for the
Auggies on an unassisted goal, her second of the weekend series,
seven minutes into the game. The 1-0 Auggie lead stood until midway
through the second period, when Lindsay Jacobs (Fr., Maple
Grove, Minn.) scored a power-play goal on asssits from Jessica
Christopherson (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Trygestad.
Augsburg outshot
St. Thomas by a 30-28 margin. Fedoryk made 26 saves in a losing
effort, while Karissa Stapf (So., Burnsville, Minn.) made
29 saves to score the win for the Tommies.
Augsburg hosts
Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a nonconference game Tuesday (2/6)
at 7:05 p.m., and faces Hamline in a conference series Thursday
(2/8) and Friday (2/9). Thursday's game is at 8:30 p.m. at the
State Fair Coliseum, while Friday's game is at 7:05 p.m. at the
Augsburg Ice Arena. St. Thomas faces Gustavus in a two-game series
Friday and Saturday. Both games are at Gustavus, at 7:05 p.m.
and 2:05 p.m. respectively.
