MINNEAPOLIS
(12/8/01) -- Laura Hoffman
(So., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) and Melynda Kleewein
(Fr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) scored third-period goals,
as Augsburg College rallied from a 3-1 second-period deficit to
claim a 3-3 overtime tie in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference women's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg
Ice Arena.
With the draw, Augsburg broke
a five-game losing streak and moved to 2-8-1 overall, 1-4-1 in
MIAC play. St. Thomas moved to 4-3-2 overall, 3-1-2 in the MIAC,
breaking a four-game winning streak for the Tommies. St. Thomas
won 4-0 on Friday at its home rink, Parade Ice Arena.
After a 1-1 first period, the
Tommies scored two goals in the second period to take a commanding
lead, with Heather Martin (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Blake
HS) scoring on a power-play feed from Rachel Reinhardt (Fr.,
Hastings, Minn.) at the 10:56 mark, and Tomery Stolz (So.,
St. Louis Park, Minn.) scoring her team-leading seventh goal of
the year on an unassisted shot at the 16:10 mark.
But the Auggies rallied back
in the third period. Hoffman picked off a pass and scored on a
blast off the pipe and into the net at the 3:10 mark, and Kleewein
scored on the power play on a shot from Annie Mattison (Sr.,
Anchorage, Alaska/East HS) at the 14:12 mark.
The game was delayed by 17 minutes
in the third period, when St. Thomas player Jess Christopherson
(So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) suffered an injury on a collision
into the boards. An ambulance was called and Christopherson was
taken to a local hospital as a precaution.
Augsburg held the momentum for
most of the third period and overtime, outshooting St. Thomas
by a 3-1 mark in the five-minute extra session.
Laura McGowan (Sr., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park
HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies on a goal from Rachel
Leger (Sr., Austin, Minn.), at the 6:01. But two minutes later,
St. Thomas tied the game, as Kelly Kopel (Jr., Rosemount,
Minn.) scored on assists from Jill Goral (Sr., South St.
Paul, Minn.) and Jordan Benson (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.).
Augsburg outshot St. Thomas
by a 33-31 margin, just the fourth time Augsburg has outshot an
opponent in 11 games this season. Katie Fedoryk (So., Austin,
Minn.) made 28 saves for Augsburg, while Karissa Stapf (Jr.,
Burnsville, Minn.) made 30 saves for the Tommies.
Augsburg returns to action with
a nonconference game against Union (N.Y.) on Thursday (12/13)
at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. It will be the last game
for the Auggies before the holiday break. St. Thomas has a two-game
series next weekend, with both games at Concordia-Moorhead. Friday's
(12/14) game is at 7 p.m., and Saturday's (12/15) game is at 2
p.m.
