ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/22/03) --
Behind 15 saves from goaltender Katie Fedoryk (Jr., Austin, Minn.) for
her fourth career shutout and second this season, Augsburg College defeated
Hamline University 4-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's
hockey game Wednesday night at the State Fair Coliseum.
Fedoryk made five saves in the
first period, eight in the second, and two in the third period for Augsburg
(8-9-1 overall, 6-5-0 MIAC) to earn the shutout over the Pipers (2-14-1 overall,
0-11 MIAC).
The Auggies took a 1-0 lead
at the end of the first 20 minutes. Angela Bergeson (Fr., Red Wing, Minn.)
scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 16:50 mark of the first period,
her first career goal. Christina Hughes (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) had the
assist. The lead would be stretched to 2-0 on Annie Annunziato's (Jr.,
Commack, N.Y.) even-strength goal at the 18:22 mark of the second, on a feed
from Lauren Chezick (So., Hastings, Minn.).
The Auggies would tack off two
more goals in the third period. Genevieve Allegrezza (Jr., Anchorage,
Alaska/Service HS) scored on feeds from Jana Ford (So., Eagan, Minn.)
and Hannah Dietrich (So., Luverne, Minn.) at the 5:47 mark on the power
play. Chezick ended the scoring on assists from Carrie Velenchenko
(So., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Annunziato at the 13:04 mark.
Both Chezick and Allegrezza
have 35 points this season, ranking them in a tie for seventh nationally among
Division III women's players in points per game (1.94 per game) through Wednesday's
games. Only one player -- Elmira's Laura Hurd -- has more points (36).
Chezick is ninth nationally in goals (17), while Annunziato is 18th (15).
Piper goaltender Rachael
Young made 37 saves in a losing effort. Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 41-15
margin.
