MINNEAPOLIS (2/15/03) -- Goalies
Kristin Johnson (So., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) of Augsburg College
and Morgan Kane (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) of the College of St. Catherine
scored shutouts, as Augsburg and St. Catherine played to a 0-0, overtime tie
in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday
afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
It is the first scoreless tie
in the eight-year history of Augsburg's women's hockey program (the 10th tie
in school history), and the first scoreless tie in the five-year history of
MIAC women's hockey.
The draw is the second tie of
the weekend series, as the teams played a 4-4 tie on Friday. Both teams remain
in the hunt for a spot in the MIAC postseason playoffs. Conference champion
St. Thomas and Gustavus have clinched spots in the five-team postseason playoffs,
but five teams -- Concordia, St. Mary's, Augsburg, St. Catherine and St. Olaf
-- remain in the race for the final three spots.
Both teams had several chances
to score during the game, but the two goalies were up to the task. St. Catherine
goalie Kane stopped all 34 Augsburg shots to score her second shutout of the
season, and Augsburg goalie Johnson stopped all 33 Wildcat shots to pick up
her fourth shutout of the year.
The game was a clean one, as
each team had three penalties for six minutes. Both teams could not convert
on two power-play opportunities each.
Both teams finish the regular
season next weekend with important series. Augsburg faces eighth-place St. Benedict,
with Friday's (2/21) game at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena and Saturday's
(2/22) game at 2 p.m. at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn.
St. Catherine faces second-place Gustavus, with Friday's game at 8:30 p.m. at
the Drake Ice Arena in St. Paul, and Saturday's game at 4:05 p.m. at the Lund
Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn.
