MINNEAPOLIS (12/5/03) -- Ingrid
Neve (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Roseville HS), Katie Deschneau (Sr., Arden
Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Andrea Peterson (Fr., Vadnais Heights,
Minn./White Bear Lake HS) had a goal and assist apiece for Gustavus Adolphus
College, as the Gusties claimed their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference women's hockey victory of the season with a 3-1 triumph over host
Augsburg College on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Gustavus built a 3-0 lead with
goals in each period, improving to 3-3-0 overall and 1-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg,
which did not score until the final minutes of the contest, falls to 4-3-0 overall
and 2-1 in MIAC play. The
teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (12/6) at 2:05 p.m. at Gustavus'
Lund Ice Arena (Don Roberts Rink) in St. Peter, Minn.
Outshooting the Auggies by a
26-19 margin -- including a 22-9 edge in the first two periods -- Gustavus dominated
play throughout the game, controlling the tempo and flow of action.
The Gusties scored their first
goal on the power play at the 9:19 mark of the first period, as Neve scored
her team-high fifth goal of the season on assists from Peterson and Deschneau.
Deschneau scored her goal in the final minute of the second period, claiming
a tally from Laura Stypulkowski (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Abby
Randall (So., Minnetonka, Minn.).
The backbreaker for the Auggies
came at the 7:17 mark of the third period, when Peterson scored a power-play
goal with one second remaining on the Gusties' advantage. Assists were credited
to Neve and Leah Erickson (Jr., Benson, Minn.).
Gustavus was 2-of-5 on its power
plays, while Augsburg was 0-for-4.
Augsburg scored with 2:30 remaining
in the game, when Lauren Chezick (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) scored her second
goal of the season, on an assist from Stacy Anderson (Fr., Huntington
Beach, Calif./Marina HS).
Kara Meyer (Fr.,
Detroit Lakes, Minn.) made 18 save, including nine in the final period, to score
her first collegiate victory in goal for the Gusties. Augsburg
goalie Kristin Johnson (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn./Wayzata HS) made 23 saves
in a losing effort.
