STORY FROM ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY SPORTS INFORMATION

WINONA, Minn. (11/17/06) -- It took a little longer than expected, but the St. Mary's University women's hockey team picked up its first win of the season Friday evening. Stuck in the midst of a season-opening four-game winless streak, the Cardinals were in dire need of a win as they opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play by hosting Augsburg College on Friday at the SMU Ice Arena.

Fueled by goals from Amy Madden (Sr., East Grand Rapids, Mich.), Jessica Ribish (Sr., Elm Grove, Wis.) and Laura Mueller (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.), a win is exactly what the Cardinals got, as St. Mary's (1-3-1 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC) rolled to a 3-1 victory in the MIAC opener for both teams.

Caryn Quist (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) had the lone goal for Augsburg (0-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 MIAC), a third-period power-play tally from Jackie Keller (Jr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS).

The Cardinals scored single goals in all three periods, before the Auggies foiled SMU goalie Nikki Jung's (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) bid for a shutout with their lone goal with just 2:08 remaining in regulation.

St. Mary's outshot Augsburg by a 44-20 margin. Jung had 19 saves to score the win, while Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) collected 41 saves in goal for the Auggies.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (11/18) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
