MINNEAPOLIS (2/5/99) -- Augsburg College clinched at least
a share of the inaugural Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
women's hockey regular-season championship Friday night, stopping
the College of St. Benedict 4-2 in a game at Augsburg Ice Arena.
The Auggies improve to 12-3-1 overall and 8-0-0 in the MIAC
with conference games remaining at St. Mary's on Saturday (2/6/99)
and at Gustavus Adolphus next Friday (2/12/99). Each of the other
five MIAC teams has at least two MIAC losses. St. Benedict falls
to 11-11 overall and 4-4 in the MIAC. The MIAC is in its first
season of women's hockey championship play this season.
Augsburg's Angie Rieger (So., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm
HS), Erica Johnson (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) and Stephanie
Johnson (So., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) had a goal and assist
apiece, as Augsburg scored the first four goals of the game. Annie
Mattison (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska/East HS) had the other goal
for the Auggies.
Katy Rollwagen (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Visitation HS)
scored both of St. Benedict's goals in the third period, one unassisted
and the other on an assist from Shannon Kegley (Fr., St.
Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS).
Meg Schmidt (Jr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley
HS) stopped 28 of 30 shots in goal for the Auggies, improving
to 9-1-1 with a goals-against-average of 1.32 and save percentage
of .953. Kristin Blumberg (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham
Hall HS) made 28 saves in a losing effort.
