MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (1/27/99) -- The top-ranked Middlebury College
women's ice hockey team solidified their spot as the top team
in Division III women's hockey as they defeated the third-ranked
Augsburg Auggies of Minnesota 4-0. The Panthers now have a 14-game
winning streak, and are 62-0 in ECAC play since the league's inception
in 1995-96.
Middlebury opened the scoring 8:28 into the period as Janice
O'Neil (Sr., Louisburg, Nova Scotia) broke in all alone and beat
Augsburg goaltender Meg Schmidt (Jr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry
Sibley HS) for the 1-0 lead. The Panthers made is a 2-0 game midway
through the period as Ashley Morton (Fr., Stowe, Vt.) tipped in
a shot following a wrister from the blue line from Nico Kieves
(Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.). Morton netted her second goal in 1:57
as she scored shorthanded with a nice feed from Catherine Elkins
(Fr., Bernardsville, N.J.) to make a 3-0 game after one period.
After a scoreless second period, Sylvia Ryan (Jr., Stellartown,
Nova Scotia) made it 4-0 4:34 into the third period as she put
home a loose puck in the crease.
Beth Denoncourt (Jr., Westfield, Mass.) made 13 saves in goal
for the Panthers, while Schmidt made 40 saves for the Auggies.
Middlebury will host sixth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.)
on Saturday (1/30) at 7:30 p.m. Augsburg travels to Williams (Mass.)
for the second game of its three-game East Coast trip on Thursday
(1/28) at 7 p.m.
