MINNEAPOLIS (2/13/99) -- Shannon Kennedy (Jr., Woburn, Mass./Buckingham,
Browne & Nichols) and Winny Brodt (So., Roseville, Minn.)
had two goals and an assist each as the University of Minnesota
poured it on its crosstown rivals, blanking Augsburg College 10-0
in a nonconference women's hockey game Saturday night at Augsburg
Ice Arena.
The Golden Gophers, the No. 4-ranked team in the latest Division
I national poll, improves to 22-2-2 overall, while Augsburg, co-champions
of the Division III Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,
drops to 12-6-1 overall.
Minnesota outshot the Auggies by a 72-4 margin, not allowing
an Auggie shot until early in the second period. Meg Schmidt (Jr.,
West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) made 62 saves in goal for
the Auggies.
Ambria Thomas (So., Fairbanks, Alaska/West Valley HS) had a
goal and two assists for the Gophers, while Jenny Schmidgall (Fr.,
Edina, Minn.) had three assists and Courtney Kennedy (So., Woburn,
Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) had two goals.
Minnesota hosts Providence College in a two-game series next
weekend (Saturday/Sunday, 2/20-21), while Augsburg completes its
season at the two-game Augsburg Invitational tournament (four
top teams in the MIAC) Feb. 27-28.
