Game Summary:
FRIDLEY, Minn. (1/14/00) -- Augsburg College set a several
school single-game scoring records in pounding host Bethel College
11-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's
hockey game at the Columbia Ice Arena.
The 11 goals set a single-game goals record, breaking the old
mark of 10 scored in a 10-0 win over St. Catherine in 1998. With
three goals in a 40-second span in the first period, the Auggies
set a record for fastest three goals in a game, and with the fourth
goal of the game in 1:26, the Auggies set a new fastest four-goal
mark. The previous three-goal record (2:59) was set in a 1997
Augsburg-Gustavus contest, and the previous four-goal record (7:45)
was set in the 10-0 win over St. Catherine in 1998.
Augsburg improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC with the
win, while Bethel fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the MIAC. The
two teams conclude their series on Saturday (1/15) at 7:05 p.m.
at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Four Auggies scored two goals apiece in the game, including
the team's newest player, Sarah Garrison (So., West Des
Moines, Iowa/Valley HS), who was in her first contest after transferring
to Augsburg during the winter break. She earned MIAC Player of
the Year honors last season at Gustavus. Garrison's goals, both
unassisted, came in the third period, and she assisted on another
for a three-point night.
Laura McGowan (So., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake Park
HS) and Genevieve Antonello (So., New Brighton, Minn./Minnehaha
Academy) also had two goals and an assist apiece, and Angie
Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) had the first
two goals of the game to improve her team-leading total to 10
goals on the season.
Katie Cheese (So., Shakopee, Minn.) had a goal and an
assist, and Cindy Drum (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet HS)
and April Leger (So., Austin, Minn.) had the other Auggie
goals.
Goalie Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry
Sibley HS) made 20 saves to score her second shutout of the season
in the win for Augsburg, tying a single-season school record for
shutouts set by Kristin Lawson last season.
Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 30-20 margin. Kim Myers (So.,
Coon Rapids, Minn.) took the loss in goal for the Royals, giving
up five goals before being relieved by Debbie Foskett (Fr.,
Prior Lake, Minn.) midway through the first period.
