Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (1/14/00) -- Carrie McCarville (Jr., Hopkins,
Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) and Stephanie Johnson (Jr.,
Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) each scored two goals on Saturday, leading
Augsburg College to a 7-1 victory over Bethel College in a Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game at Augsburg
Ice Arena.
The Auggies gave scoring opportunities to plenty of young players,
as the team's major scorers were given the night off by head coach
Jill Pohtilla. The Auggies improved to 6-4 overall and
4-0 in the MIAC with the win, while Bethel fell to 1-5 overall
and 0-4 in the MIAC.
McCarville scored both of her goals in the first period, beginning
an Auggie barrage that saw the hosts outshoot Bethel by a 64-14
margin. The 64 shots tied a single-game school record for shots
on goal, previously reached in an 8-2 win over Bemidji State on
Jan. 1, 1999.
Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS),
had a goal and assist for the Auggies to complete an impressive
debut weekend with the Auggies. A transfer from Gustavus during
the holiday break, the 1998-99 MIAC Player of the Year had a five-point
weekend (three goals, two assists) against the Royals.
Genevieve Antonello (So., New Brighton, Minn./Minnehaha
Academy) and Cindy Drum (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet HS)
had the other Auggie goals in the game.
Brandi Schmidgall (So., Morris, Minn.) scored the lone
goal for Bethel.
Jodi Winters (Fr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville Area
HS) made 13 saves to score the win in goal for the Auggies, while
Debbie Foskett (Fr., Prior Lake, Minn.) was forced to make
57 saves in a losing effort.
Augsburg continues its MIAC campaign with a two-game series
against St. Benedict next Friday and Saturday (1/21-22, Friday
at Augsburg, Saturday at St. Benedict), while Bethel returns to
action with a series against St. Mary's Jan. 19 and 22 (Wednesday
at St. Mary's, Saturday at Bethel).
