Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (1/21/00) -- Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland,
Minn./New Ulm Public HS) and Sarah Garrison (So., West
Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) each scored unassisted goals for Augsburg
College, leading the host Auggies to a 3-1 victory over the College
of St. Benedict in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
women's hockey contest Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
With the win, the Auggies, the No. 2-rated team in the U.S. College Hockey Online
(www.uscollegehockey.com) Division III national rankings,
improves to 7-4 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC. St. Benedict drops
to 10-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the MIAC. The two teams finish
their series Saturday (1/22) at 2 p.m. at the Rich-Lakes Arena
in Richmond, Minn., St. Benedict's home rink.
After a scoreless first period, Rieger opened the scoring on
a shorthanded breakaway at the 42-second mark. Garrison, playing
in just her third game as an Auggie after transferring at the
beginning of the month from Gustavus, notched her fourth goal
of the year on an unassisted tally at the 12:14 mark.
St. Benedict's Kelly Wegwerth (So., Maplewood, Minn./Roseville
HS) cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal late in the second stanza, but
the Auggies iced the win on a goal from Stephanie Johnson (Jr.,
Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) early in the third period.
Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley
HS) made 28 saves in goal to pick up the victory for Augsburg,
while Kristen Blumberg (So., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham
Hall HS) made 30 saves in a losing effort.
