Game Summary:
TROY, N.Y. (1/26/00) -- Laura McGowan (So., Fridley,
Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) picked up her fifth goal of the season
at the 3:09 mark of overtime, lifting Augsburg College to a 6-5
win over host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a nonconference
women's hockey game Wednesday night at RPI's Houston Field House.
McGowan's goal thwarted an RPI comeback that saw the host Engineers
rally from a 5-1 second-period deficit to tie the game midway
through the third period. Augsburg, the No. 2 rated team in the
latest U.S. College
Hockey Online (www.uscollegehockey.com) Division III national
poll, improves to 9-4-0 overall, while RPI drops to 7-7-1 overall.
Cindy Acropolis (Sr., Brick, N.J.) scored three of the
Engineers' goals in the four-goal comeback, adding an assist on
the other comeback goal for a four-point night. Talia Acampora
(Sr., Woodbridge, Conn.) had two goals. Libby Eldridge
(Jr., Pennington, N.Y./Kimball Union Academy) and Julie
Durham (So., Janesville, Wis.) had three assists apiece.
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS)
scored twice in the first period and added two assists for the
Auggies, giving her team highs of 13 goals and 19 points. Rieger
set an Augsburg school record for the quickest goal to start a
game, scoring just 15 seconds into the first period.
Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS)
scored and had two assists for the Auggies, giving her five goals
in five games after transferring to Augsburg from Gustavus Adolphus
at the semester break.
Augsburg also received goals from Annie Simons (Sr.,
South St. Paul, Minn.) and Angie Gliniany (So., Brookyn
Park, Minn./Park Center HS). Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine,
Minn.) had two assists.
Auggie goalie Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry
Sibley HS) made 30 saves, including two in overtime, to pick up
the win. Nina Lynch (Sr., Boston, Mass.) allowed five goals
before being pulled in the second period. Laura DeNuccio (Jr.,
North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 12 saves for RPI.
Augsburg, on its annual three-game East Coast trip, travels
to Sacred Heart (Conn.) on Thursday (1/27) at 7 p.m. RPI hosts
Colby College on Friday (1/28) at 7 p.m.
