MILFORD, Conn. (1/27/00) -- Host Sacred Heart University scored
a goal in the third period to pull within one, but could not get
the equalizer down the stretch as the No.2-ranked
(US College Hockey Online Division III national poll) Augsburg
College Auggies defeated the Pioneers 4-3 at the Milford Ice Pavilion
in a nonconference women's hockey game Thursday night.
Sophomore Sarah Bergin (So., Keene, N.H.) tallied on the
power play at the 12:02 mark of the third and for the rest of
the period, Sacred Heart applied some heavy pressure. But Augsburg's
goalie, Jodi Winters (Fr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville
Area HS), came up big with a few glove saves to preserve the win.
The Pioneers used an aggressive forecheck to keep pressure on
the Augsburg net throughout the contest and took a 2-1 lead early
in the second period. However, Augsburg scored twice in a span
of 18 seconds to regain the lead for good. Sophomore Sarah
Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) and linemate
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS)
did the damage for the visitors. Garrison finished with a goal
and two assists. Rieger had a goal and three assists.
Sacred Heart senior center Lauren Wiggins (Sr., Plymouth
Meeting, Pa.) assisted on the Pioneers first goal of the game,
giving her 110 points in her four-year career and making her the
new all-time leading scorer in school history.
Augsburg, now 10-4 overall, concludes its three-game East Coast
trip with a game at Wesleyan (Conn.) on Saturday at 7 p.m. Sacred
Heart, now 5-7-1 overall, hosts Union (N.Y.) on Saturday at 3
p.m.
