Sports Information:
ST. PETER, Minn. (2/4/00) -- For 58 minutes on Friday night,
the Gustavus Adolphus College women's hockey team kept the second-ranked (US
College Hockey Online) Augsburg College women's hockey team
at bay. However, the Auggies pulled a rabbit out of their hat,
scoring two goals in the final two minutes, including the gamewinner
with 13 seconds remaining to escape with a thrilling 5-4 victory
in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on
Friday night at Lund Ice Arena.
Augsburg senior forward Erica Johnson (Sr., Blaine,
Minn.) scored the tying goal and junior forward Angie Rieger
(Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) scored the game-winner.
It was a dissapointing loss for the Gusties, who led 4-2 early
in the third period and outshot the Auggies 31 to 16 in the contest.
With the victory, Augsburg improves to 12-4-0 overall and 7-0-0
in the MIAC, while Gustavus falls to 10-8-0 overall and 4-3-0
in the MIAC. The two teams will play again Saturday night in Minneapolis
(Augsburg Ice Arena) at 7:05 pm.
Gustavus forward Kat Christian (So., Annandale, Minn./Minnetonka
HS) gave Gustavus a 4-2 lead just two minutes into the third period,
but Annie Simons (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) countered
a goal just three minutes later. The score remained at 4-3 until
Johnson scored at 17:57 to knot the score at 4-4. Rieger then
gave the Auggies the thrilling victory with her goal, which was
assisted by Johnson and Simons, at 19:47.
The Gusties claimed a 1-0 lead in the contest when Nikki
Lindstrom (So., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS)
scored at 8:16 of the first period. Augsburg tied the score at
17:45 with a goal by Annie Mattison (So., Anchorage, Alaska/East
HS).
In the second period, Gustavus jumped out to a 3-1 lead on
goals by Nicole Guimond (Fr., Orono, Minn.) at 7:06 and
Linnea Carlson (So., Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS),
which was shorthanded, at 11:15. Augsburg kept the game close
with a goal by Laura McGowan (So., Fridley, Minn./Spring
Lake Park HS) at 14:28 to cut the Gustavus lead to 3-2 entering
the third period.
Augsburg goaltender Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul,
Minn./Henry Sibley HS) recorded 27 saves, while Gustavus netminder
Sarah Pinkham (So., Naperville, Ill./North HS) turned away
11 shots.
The contest was very cleanly played, as only three penalties
were whistled including two for four minutes to Gustavus and one
for two minutes to Augsburg. The Auggies were one-for- two on
the power play while Gustavus did not convert on its one power
play opportunity.
