Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (2/5/00) -- Nikki Norton (So., White Bear
Lake, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal with 53 seconds to play
Saturday night, lifting her Gustavus Adolphus College women's
hockey team to a 5-4 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Augsburg Ice Arena.
The win lifts Gustavus to 11-8 overall and 5-3 in the MIAC,
while knocking Augsburg, the No. 2-rated team in the U.S.
College Hockey Online Division III women's hockey national poll,
to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in the MIAC.
The Gusties, down 4-2 entering the third period, scored three
goals to claim the win, including two goals in the final 1:23.
The finish mirrored Friday
night's game between the two schools, where Augsburg scored
three goals in the third period, including twice in the last 2:03,
to score a 5-4 win at Gustavus.
Carrie Stefaniak (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry
Sibley HS), who played two seasons at Augsburg before transferring
to Gustavus last season, scored for the Gusties at the 7:34 mark
of the third period. Michelle Zaske (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.)
tied the game at 18:47 on an unassisted blast, setting the stage
for Norton's game-winning goal.
Augsburg led 3-2 at the end of the first period, and Emily
Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) notched the final tally for the
Auggies at the 19:55 mark of the second period. Miller had a goal
and two assists in the contest to lead Augsburg.
Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS),
who earned MIAC Player of the Year honors at Gustavus last year
before transferring to Augsburg at this year's semester break,
scored a goal against her former teammates in the second period,
giving her seven goals in her first nine games as an Auggie.
Stephanie Johnson (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) and
Annie Simons (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) also scored for
the Auggies, with Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New
Ulm Public HS) adding two assists.
Nikki Lindstrom (So., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley
HS) and Jennifer McCall (So., West St. Paul, Minn./Visitation
HS) each had unassisted goals for the Gusties in the first period.
Jennifer Cannon (So., Sioux City, Iowa), playing in
just her fourth game of the season, stopped 20 shots to pick up
the win in goal for the Gusties. Augsburg's Meg Schmidt (Sr.,
West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) made 30 saves in a losing
effort.
Augsburg returns to action with a two-game series against St.
Thomas Friday and Saturday (2/11-12). Friday's game is at Augsburg
Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m., and Saturday's contest is at Parade Ice
Arena in Minneapolis at 7:30 p.m. Gustavus has a two-game series
against St. Benedict next weekend, playing at River-Lakes Arena
in Richmond, Minn., Friday at 5 p.m., and hosting the Blazers
at Lund Ice Arena in St. Peter, Minn., Saturday at 7 p.m.
