Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (2/19/00) -- Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland,
Minn./New Ulm Public HS) scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal
10 seconds into the third period Saturday, providing the game-winning
goal as Augsburg College scored a 4-3 win over St. Mary's University
in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey
game at Augsburg Ice Arena.
The game, the first of a two-game series, pitted the top two
teams in the MIAC and two of the top four teams in the latest
U.S. College Hockey
Online (www.uscollegehockey.com) Division III national rankings.
The win lifted Augsburg, rated fourth in the weekly survey, to
15-5-0 overall and 10-1-0 in the MIAC, while St. Mary's, rated
second in the national poll, suffered its first loss in MIAC play,
falling to 16-5-1 overall and 10-1-0 in the MIAC.
The two teams finish the MIAC series with a game Sunday (2/20)
at 2:05 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn. Both teams
have one conference series after their second game to finish the
MIAC regular season, but both teams have already wrapped up berths
in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs.
Rieger's goal came after St. Mary's had rallied from a 3-0
second-period deficit to tie the game at 3-3 entering the final
stanza. Missy Westergren (So., Lonsdale, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale
HS) scored twice, once unassisted and once on the power play,
for the Cardinals.
St. Mary's took advantage of a 5-on-3 power-play advantage
to score two power-play goals in a nine-second stanza in the second
period. Westergren scored first at the 4:26 mark, followed by
a goal from Kelly O'Neil (Jr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels
HS) at the 4:37 mark.
Augsburg had built a 3-0 advantage on two goals (one on the
power play) from Annie Simons (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.)
and a score from Amber Nadreau (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Grace
Christian HS).
Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley
HS) stopped 25 shots in goal to pick up the win for the Auggies,
while Missie Meemken (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS)
stopped 30 shots in a losing effort.
