Game Summary:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/23/00) -- Amber Nadreau (Jr., Anchorage,
Alaska/Grace Christian HS), Kristi Brusletto (So., Basalt,
Colo.) and Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley
HS) scored twice each as Augsburg College rallied for a 9-4 win
over the host College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference women's hockey game Wednesday night at the
Drake Ice Arena.
With the win, Augsburg (16-5-1 overall, 11-1-1 MIAC), in first-place
in the MIAC, clinches a first-round home playoff series. The Auggies
can clinch at least a share of their second-straight MIAC regular-season
title -- and home-ice advantage for the entire MIAC playoffs --
with a win over St. Catherine (15-7-1 overall, 5-7-1 MIAC) in
the regular-season finale Saturday at 2:05 p.m. at the Augsburg
Ice Arena.
Augsburg will host a semifinal series March 3-4. The MIAC's
playoff champion, determined in the conference finals series March
10-11, will represent the MIAC in the AWCHA Division III national
championships, set for March 24-25 in Boston, Mass.
Augsburg led 3-1 after the first period, on goals from Annie
Simons (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.) (15 seconds into the game),
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) and Nadreau. But after
a Brusletto goal put the Auggies up 4-1 early in the second period,
the Wildcats rallied to tie the game at 4-4 with three straight
goals. Kim Hayes (Fr., South St. Paul, Minn.) scored her
second goal of the game, followed by consecutive goals from Courtney
Adney (Fr., St. Paul, Minn.).
Cindy Drum (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet HS) put the
Auggies ahead to stay on a feed from Erica Johnson (Sr.,
Blaine, Minn.) at the 12:59 mark of the second period. The Auggies
secured the win with two goals from Garrison, including an unassisted
power-play tally, and Nadreau's and Brusletto's second goals each.
Augsburg outshot St. Catherine by a 56-29 margin, though the
Wildcats pounded 19 shots on Auggie goalie Meg Schmidt (Sr.,
West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) in the second period. Schmidt
made 25 saves for the win. Karen Lidinsky (Fr., Mounds
View, Minn.) made 47 saves in a losing effort for St. Catherine.
