Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (2/26/00) -- For the second season in a row, Augsburg
College claimed a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference women's hockey regular-season championship, clinching
the title by knocking off the College of St. Catherine 11-1 in
a conference game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg Ice Arena.
Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS,
who transferred to Augsburg from Gustavus at the semester break,
notched her first hat trick as an Auggie with a three-goal, one-assist
performance to lead the Auggies, who finished the regular season
17-5-1 overall and 12-1-1 in the MIAC. St. Catherine finishes
its season 15-8-1 overall and 5-8-1 in the MIAC. Garrison has
15 goals and 12 assists for 27 points in just 15 Auggie games
this year.
For the second straight season, Augsburg shares the regular-season
championship with St. Mary's, which swept St. Benedict by identical
3-0 scores Friday and Saturday. But thanks to a win and tie over
St. Mary's earlier in the season, Augsburg clinches home-ice advantage
for the entire four-team MIAC playoffs.
Next week, top seed Augsburg will play host to No. 4-seed St.
Benedict (14-10-1 overall, 6-7-1 MIAC) in an MIAC playoff semifinal
series, while No. 2-seed St. Mary's (18-5-2 overall, 12-1-1 MIAC)
will host No. 3-seed Gustavus (16-8-0 overall, 10-3-0 MIAC). The
Augsburg-St. Benedict series will be Friday at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday
at a time to be determined at Augsburg Ice Arena.
After leading just 2-1 early in the second period, the Auggies
poured on the goals, scoring five times in the second period and
four times in the third. Jen Mintz (So., Bradford, Pa./Bradford
Public HS) scored two goals for the Auggies, while Stephanie
Johnson (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS) had a goal and an
assist.
Other Auggie goals came from April Leger (So., Austin,
Minn.), Laura McGowan (So., Fridley, Minn./Spring Lake
Park HS), Anne Osberg (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS),
Amber Nadreau (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian HS)
and Cindy Drum (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet HS).
Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS),
Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) and Kristi Brusletto
(So., Basalt, Colo.) had two assists apiece for the Auggies.
Rieger finished the regular season with single-season school records
(against varsity opponents only) for goals (22), assists (22)
and points (44).
Mahrya Honer (Fr., Rochester, Minn.) notched her 47th
goal of the season for the lone St. Catherine goal, on an assist
from Kim Hayes (Fr., South St. Paul, Minn.) 13 seconds
into the second period.
Augsburg outshot St. Catherine by a 59-17 margin. Meg Schmidt
(Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) made 16 saves
to pick up the win. Karen Lidinsky (Fr., Mounds View, Minn.)
made 48 saves in a losing effort.
