Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (3/3/00) -- Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland,
Minn./New Ulm Public HS) scored two first period goals and Erica
Johnson (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) added another to lead Augsburg
College past the College of St. Benedict 3-0 in the first game
of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey
playoff series Friday night at Augsburg Ice Arena.
With the win, Augsburg improves to 18-5-1 overall, while St.
Benedict drops to 14-11-1. This is the first of a two-game/minigame-format
playoff series between the Augsburg, the No. 1 seed, and No. 4
seed St. Benedict. The winner of this playoff series will advance
to the championship round of the playoffs against either No. 2
St. Mary's University or No. 3 Gustavus Adolphus College. Gustavus
leads the series after a 3-2 win Friday at St. Mary's.
Rieger's first goal came 34 seconds into the game, with assists
going to Sarah Garrison (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley
HS) and Annie Simons (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.). Johnson's
power-play goal came halfway through the second period, with assists
going to Simons and Emily Miller (Sr., Blaine, Minn.).
Twenty seconds later, Rieger notched her second goal of the game,
with Garrison assisting.
Augsburg outshot the Blazers by a 45-19 margin. St. Benedict
tried to put forth an offensive attack, but couldn't put the puck
past Auggie goalie Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry
Sibley HS), who stopped 19 shots to pick up the win for the Auggies
on her single-season school record fifth shutout of the season.
Kristen Blumberg (So., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall
HS) made 42 saves in a losing effort for the Blazers.
The second game of this series will be played Saturday (3/4)
at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
