Game Summary:
MINNEAPOLIS (3/4/00) -- Laura McGowan (So., Fridley,
Minn./St. Louis Park HS) and Sarah Garrison (So., West
Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) scored two goals apiece as Augsburg
College rolled past the College of St. Benedict 7-1 Saturday night
at Augsburg Ice Arena, sweeping its two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference women's hockey playoff series.
With the win, Augsburg (19-5-1 overall), the top-seeded team
in the playoffs, advances to the MIAC playoff finals, facing No.
3 seed Gustavus Adolphus College (18-8-0). The Gusties completed
their upset sweep of No. 2 seed St. Mary's University (19-5-1)
with a 1-1 tie on Saturday, taking three of the four points of
the series. The MIAC playoff final games will be played next Friday
and Saturday (3/10-11) at 7:05 p.m. each night at Augsburg Ice
Arena.
The MIAC playoff champion will advance to the American Women's
College Hockey Alliance (AWCHA) Division III national championship
series March 24-25 at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.
Middlebury College (Vt.), the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Division III playoff champion, will face the MIAC playoff winner
in a two-game/minigame national championship series.
St. Benedict, the No. 4 seed, finishes its season 14-12-1.
Augsburg built a 4-0 lead before the Blazers scored their only
goal of the two-game series, a shorthanded tally from Shannon
Kegley (So., St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) late in the
second period. McGowan scored the eventual game-winning goal at
the 10:47 mark of the first period, then closed the scoring for
the Auggies with her 10th goal of the season at the 15:23 mark
of the third period. Garrison's two goals were both power-play
tallies, coming late in the first and second periods. She now
has 17 goals on the season, second-most on the team. Both Garrison
and McGowan added assists for three-point nights each.
Erica Johnson (Sr., Blaine, Minn.), Angie Rieger
(Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS) and Cindy Drum
(Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet HS) each added goals for the
Auggies, with Rieger and Johnson also adding two assists each.
Amber Nadreau (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Grace Christian HS)
had two assists.
Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley
HS) made 22 saves to pick up the win in goal for the Auggies,
while St. Benedict's Kristen Blumberg (So., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham
Hall HS) faced 44 shots, stopping 37 to take the loss.
