MINNEAPOLIS
(11/22/00) -- Claiming victories in seven of 10 matches, including
five by extra-point decisions or pins, Augsburg College dominated
action in a 31-11 dual-meet victory over Minnesota State University-Moorhead
in nonconference wrestling match Wednesday night at Augsburg's
Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg, now
1-0 in dual meets this season, is the defending NCAA Division
III national champion and top-ranked team in the preseason Division
III national poll. MSU-Moorhead, now 1-2 in dual meets this season,
was rated 19th in the preseason Division II national poll.
The Auggies
claimed two pins, one technical fall and two major decisions to
claim the large advantage in the match. Tony Abbott (Jr.,
Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS), ranked fifth
in the Division III individual national rankings at 165 pounds,
notched a 2:44 pin in his match over Mike Richards (Jr.,
Wadena, Minn.), and Tony Quance (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn./Stillwater
HS) claimed a 2:44 pin over Adam Toso (So., Wahpeton, N.D.)
at 149 pounds.
In the lone
meeting of ranked wrestlers on the evening, Augsburg's Nick
Slack (Jr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) dominated in an 11-1 major-decision
win over Travis Nagel (Sr., Frazee, Minn.) at 174 pounds.
Slack, who went 31-0 to win the national title last season, is
ranked No. 1 to start the season at 174; Nagel, a Division II
All-American last season, entered this year ranked fifth in Division
II at 174.
Darin Bertram
(Jr.,
Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS), ranked No. 1 in the nation
at 125 pounds, notched a 16-0, technical-fall victory at 125;
and Ben Bauer (Sr., Faribault, Minn.), the defending national
champion and top-ranked wrestler at heavyweight, opened the match
with a 12-1, major-decision win.
Two of the Dragons'
three victories came by major decision -- Scott Larson (Jr.,
Cass Lake, Minn.), ranked eighth in Division II at 133; and Ryan
Kopiasz (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska/Service HS) at 184.
Augsburg returns
to action with unattached competition at the Minnesota-Morris
Cougar Open next Saturday (12/2) at Morris, Minn. The Auggies'
next dual meet is Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Southwest State University
in Marshall, Minn. MSU-Moorhead returns to action on Dec. 2 at
the Terry Haws-St. John's University Dual Meet Invitational in
Collegeville, Minn.
