Augsburg College claims 8 All-Americans, maintains lead after second round of NCAA wrestling championships

ADA, Ohio (3/3/00) -- With eight wrestlers remaining -- all in the championship bracket -- Augsburg College continued to hold the lead after the second round of the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships Friday night at the Ohio Northern University Sports Center in Ada, Ohio.

Augsburg holds a 13-point lead over defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa) -- 58 to 45 -- in the national championship race. The Auggies, who won five national titles in the 1990s (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998) are in search of their NCAA-record sixth national championship. Augsburg has eight wrestlers still alive, the most of any school. Wartburg is second with seven wrestlers remaining alive, but just five remain in the championship bracket.

By remaining in the championship chase after the first day of competition, the eight Auggie wrestlers still alive are assured of finishing in the top eight to secure All-American status. The national championships conclude Saturday (3/4/00) with sessions at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. (Eastern time).

Josh Cagle (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) remained unbeaten at 38-0 on the season with two victories in the 149-pound bracket Saturday, a first-period pin and his school-record 22nd technical fall of the year, a 15-0 triumph over Loras' Craig Collins in the championship quarterfinals. Cagle, a two-time All-American, finished second in the nation last season.

Nick Slack (So., Belle Plaine, Minn.) also remained unbeaten and earned All-America honors for the first time, improving to 29-0 with two victories at 174 pounds. Darin Bertram (So., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS), the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, picked up a third-period fall and a 15-0 technical fall win to improve to 30-1 overall this season and pick up his second-straight All-America honor.

Defending national champion John Marchette (Jr., Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover HS) picked up two major decision wins to move to 30-2 on the season. He is the top-ranked wrestler in his bracket. Also ranked No. 1 in the nation, Nik Lewandowski (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) moved to 31-7 with two wins at 184 pounds, including a major-decision triumph.

Brian Jones (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) moved to 33-5 with two decisions at 141. Josh Clausen (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) is now 30-1 after two wins at 197 pounds, and Ben Bauer (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) earned All-America honors for the first time in his career at heavyweight, moving to 37-2 with a win in the championship quarterfinals.

Two Auggie wrestlers saw their seasons end with losses in the wrestlebacks. Tony Abbott (So., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) saw his season end at 22-12 with consecutive losses at 165 pounds, and Justin Baker (Sr., Kerkhoven, Minn./Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg HS) picked up one victory, but lost in the quarterfinal match and dropped a 3-2 sudden-death overtime loss to Ben Barclay of Luther (Iowa) to be eliminated and end his final season with a 26-9 record.

Among other Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools, St. John's has one wrestler of its five qualifiers remaining in competition. The Johnnies finished the day in 18th place with 8 points. Brandon Novak remained alive with two victories at 197 pounds, including a 6-5 win in the champioship quarterfinals over Wisconsin-La Crosse's Bart Bly. Ryan Tietz claimed a pin victory in his first match at 184 pounds, but but lost two straight matches to end his campaign at the national meet. Adam Mergen lost two straight matches at 125, as did Jeremy Abfalter at 165 and Chris Gross at 174.

St. Olaf's lone qualifier, Thor Apland, lost two straight matches and was eliminated from competition in the wrestleback round.
