Augsburg College advances five to title matches, maintains large lead after third round of NCAA wrestling championships

ADA, Ohio (3/4/00) -- Advancing five wrestlers into national championship matches, the Augsburg College wrestling team built a nearly insurmountable lead en route to its NCAA-record sixth national championship after the third round of action Saturday at the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships Saturday afternoon at the Ohio Northern University Sports Center in Ada, Ohio.

Augsburg holds a commanding lead over defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa) -- 115 to 80 -- in the national championship race. The Auggies, who won five national titles in the 1990s (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998) are in search of their NCAA-record sixth national championship. The Auggies advanced five wrestlers to national-championship matches, one to a third-place match and two to fifth-place matches. All will be contested tonight starting at 6 p.m. (Eastern time). No other school has more than three wrestlers in national final matches.

Josh Cagle (Sr., Faribault, Minn.) remained unbeaten at 39-0 on the season his second-straight technical fall, a 16-0 win over Wilmington's Jimmy Wallace in the 149-pound semifinals. Cagle notched his school-record 23nd technical fall of the year. Cagle, a two-time All-American who finished second in the nation last season, will wrestle Montclair State's (N.J.) Rami Ratel in the championship match.

Nick Slack (So., Belle Plaine, Minn.) also remained unbeaten and picked up his 30th win of the season, topping Buena Vista (Iowa) wrestler Sevond Cole 9-4 in the 174-pound semifinals. Slack will wrestle John Roden of Springfield (Mass.) in the final tonight.

Darin Bertram (So., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS), the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds, moved to 31-1 with a 125-pound semifinal win, 10-2, over Michael Jones of Delaware Valley (Pa.). Bertram will wrestle Zac Weiglein of Wartburg in the national championship match, a rematch of last year's final, which Weiglein won 7-5. This season in an Auggie dual-meet win over Wartburg on Jan. 9, Bertram picked up a 6-4 overtime win over Weiglein, which catapaulted Bertram into the No. 1 spot in the national rankings.

Josh Clausen (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) improved to 31-1 after topping Wartburg's Matt Buskohl in the 197-pound semifinal. Clausen will face Eric Vaughn of SUNY-Brockport (N.Y.) in the final tonight. Last year, Clausen finished fourth in the nation, while Vaughn finished second.

At heavyweight, Ben Bauer (Jr., Faribault, Minn.) improved to 38-2 with an 8-4 triumph over SUNY-Oswego's (N.Y.) Jason Turner in the semifinals. Bauer will wrestle Rob Cosper of Lycoming, last year's fourth-place finisher, in the national final match.

Nik Lewandowski (Jr., Hastings, Minn.), who finished second in the nation the last two years, will wrestle for third place at 184 pounds tonight. He dropped a 3-1 overtime decision to Pacific's Ian Courter in the national semifinal match, but rallied back for a 2-1 win over Luther's Gene Adams in the consolation semifinal to improve to 32-8. He will face Andy Povenski of Delaware Valley in the third-place match.

Defending national champion John Marchette (Jr., Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover HS) fell to 30-4 with two losses at 133. He dropped a 5-3 overtime decision to Rick Schwietzberger of Buena Vista (Iowa) in the national semifinal match, then was upset by John Conte of Wilkes (Pa.) 5-1 in two overtimes in the consolation semifinal. He will wrestle SUNY-Brockport's Frank Palumbo in the fifth-place final tonight.

He lost 10-6 to Forian Ghinea of Montclair State in the semifinals, then rallied but lost 11-10 to Delaware Valley's Bryan Klass in the consolation semifinal. He will wrestle Casey Doyle of Wartburg in the fifth-place match tonight.
