Wrestling 3/5/05 -- Augsburg at NCAA Division III National Championships -- Session 3 AUGSBURG NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS WEBSITE -- CLICK HERE NORTHFIELD, Minn. (3/5/05) -- Augsburg College has qualified a national-record-tying six wrestlers to national championship matches, as the Auggies continue to expand their lead at the NCAA Division III national championships, following Saturday's third round at St. Olaf College's Tostrud Fieldhouse. The Auggies, with a school-record and national-record-tying 10 All-Americans, now have tied the Division III record for finalists, six set by Wartburg (Iowa) in its national championship run last season. Augsburg enters the final round, scheduled to start tonight at 5 p.m., with 143.0 points, compared to 94.5 points for Wartburg, the two-time defending national titlists. Luther (Iowa) is third with 91.0 points. Augsburg's 143 points is already its most ever in Division III national championship competition, and already the third-most in Division III history, behind the 166.5 of Wartburg in 2003 and 156 for Wartburg last season. Augsburg's previous point high was 140.5, set last season in finishing second to Wartburg. Augsburg's six finalists tonight are the most of any school; Wartburg and Luther have three apiece and no other school has more than one. Augsburg's four defending national titlists will compete for national crowns again tonight, after each won their semifinals earlier today. Marcus LeVesseur (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS), the two-time defending national champion and three-time All-American at 157 pounds, extended his consecutive-match winning streak to 123 straight victories with his second pin of the tournament and 24th pin of the season, a 2:30 match-ender over Rick Lamas of Elmhurst (Iowa). LeVesseur extended his collegiate unbeaten streak to 123, the second-longest winning streak in college wrestling history behind the 159 of Cael Sanderson at Iowa State (1998-2002). LeVesseur passed Carlton Haselrig of Pitt-Johnstown (Pa., 1985-89) for the second-longest overall unbeaten streak in college wrestling history. Haselrig went 121-0-1 during his streak; LeVesseur has yet to lose a college wrestling match. Defending 133-pound national champion and three-time All-American Mark Matzek (Sr., Ellsworth, Wis.) built an 8-0 first-period lead on the strength of consecutive 3-point near-falls and claimed an 11-4 win over Jestin Hulegaard of Buena Vista (Iowa) in the semifinals. Matzek, the top-ranked wrestler at 133, is now 33-0, extending his winnning streak to 41 straight matches dating to last season. Matt Shankey (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) improved to 22-0 at 125 pounds and extended his winning streak to 35 straight matches with a 5-1 win over Justin McClintock of Wartburg in the semifinals. Shankey, a national titlist last year, is now 49-1 in his two seasons at Augsburg and 77-16 in his collegiate career, after wrestling at Division I Iowa his first two seasons. Defending 174-pound national champion Joe Moon (Sr., Ellendale, Minn./New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva HS) improved to 15-0 with a 7-0 blanking of Tony Howard of McDaniel (Md.) in the semifinals. Moon is a three-time All-American and now is 120-14 in his career. Jamell Tidwell (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), the defending national runner-up and three-time All-American at 141 pounds, will face perennial rival Dustin Hinschberger of Wartburg in the finals for the second straight year, after scoring a dramatic 9-7 sudden-victory overtime win over Jeff Patzke of Luther (Iowa) in the semifinals. Tidwell led 7-3 in the second period, but Karls rallied to force overtime. Tidwell gained a takedown with 24 seconds left in the sudden-victory session to advance to the finals. Tidwell, now 34-4 this season and 155-16 in his career, is 0-4 against Hinschberger all-time. He lost to Hinschberger by a 9-1 major-decision in last season's national title match. Ryan Valek (Jr., Belle Plaine, Minn.), a two-time All-American, reached the national finals at 165 pounds with a 7-6 triumph over Frank Petrucci of Oswego State (N.Y.) in the semifinals. Valek came from behind to take a 6-5 lead on a takedown with 45 seconds left in the third period, but was called for a clasped-hands technical violation with 32 seconds left, tying the match at 6-6. However, Valek had accumulated 1:31 of riding time to earn the bonus point for the victory. Mark Simmonds (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Edison HS), a two-time All-American, will wrestle for third place at heavyweight tonight. He dropped a 5-3 decision to top-ranked Ryan Allen of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the semifinals, but rallied for a 7-4 win over Mike Hayes of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the wrestlebacks. Simmonds, who has wrestled for two seasons at Augsburg after transferring from Division II Southwest State, is now 102-49 in his career. At Augsburg, he is now 32-8 on the season, 68-17 the last two seasons. Brad Tupa (Jr., Dundas, Minn./Faribault HS) will wrestle for third place at 184, after the first-time All-American won twice on Saturday. He built a 14-0 lead after the first period on four 3-point near-falls in his consolation quarterfinal match against Mike Troutman of Ursinus (N.Y.), en route to a 16-0, second-period technical-fall win. He then scored another dominating performance in an 18-4 win over Danny Adams of Luther (Iowa) to advance to the third-place match. Tupa is now 30-6 on the season, 59-18 in his career. Justin Sorensen (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.) will wrestle for fifth place at 197 pounds, as the two-time national qualifier reached All-American status for the first time. He scored a pin in the last second of the first period in his first match of the day, against Devin Carman of Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio), but fell 7-5 in sudden-victory overtime to Will Weiss of Brockport State (N.Y.) in the consolation semifinals. Jared Evans (So., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS), a first-time All-American, will wrestle for seventh place at 149. He lost 5-2 to Wartburg's Jacob Naig in the consolation quarterfinals. The final session begins at 5 p.m. tonight with the parade of All-Americans, followed by placing matches at 5:30 p.m. Championship matches are scheduled to being at 7:30 p.m. Wrestling -- Augsburg at NCAA Division III National Championships -- Through Third Session Saturday Top 10 team standings: 1.
