Wrestling 1/13/08 -- Augsburg finishes third at NWCA/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (1/13/08) -- Splitting its two matches on Sunday, the Augsburg College wrestling team finished in third place at the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals, presented by CSG Sports Coatings, at the University of Northern Iowa's UNI Dome. In the tournament semifinals, Augsburg, ranked No. 2 in the latest NCAA Division III national rankings, suffered a 26-12 loss to No. 3-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse, but rebounded in the third-place match with a 20-16 win over No. 4-ranked Delaware Valley (Pa.). Top-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) won the tournament championship for the fourth time in the last seven years with a 25-8 triumph over Wisconsin-La Crosse. Augsburg, the defending NCAA Division III national champions and winners of 10 of the last 17 national titles, is now 6-1 in dual meets this season. The loss to Wisconsin-La Crosse marked the first Augsburg loss in a Division III dual meet to a team other than Wartburg since a 26-16 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Feb. 11, 1994. Against teams from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is now 224-18 since the 1989-90 season, losing just 13 matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season. Against strictly Division III opponents, Augsburg is 232-21 since the 1979-80 season and 156-11 since the 1989-90 season. Two Auggies won both their matches on Sunday -- No. 5-ranked Travis Lang (JR, Bismarck, N.D.) at 133 pounds and No. 2-ranked Willy Holst (SO, Prescott, Wis.) at 149. Lang claimed an 11-6 win over Wisconsin-La Crosse's Jordan Kolinski, ranked No. 4, and claimed a 19-3, second-period technical-fall victory over Delaware Valley's Brandon Clemmer. Holst claimed an 8-4 decision over Wisconsin-La Crosse's Matt Mauseth and a 4:03 pin of Delaware Valley's Jesse Harrington, ranked No. 7 nationally. Lang is now 19-1 on the season, while Holst is 18-1. Beau Hansen (FY, Albert Lea, Minn.) also claimed an upset win for the Auggies in the match against Wisconsin-La Crosse, with a 6-3 win over No. 9-ranked Jay Milz. Against Wisconsin-La Crosse, the Auggies won four of the first five weight classes to take a 12-6 lead, but lost the final five bouts, including two major decisions and a pin. Against Delaware Valley, Augsburg won five of the first seven matches, including a technical fall and pin, to build a 20-7 lead. Augsburg returns to action next Saturday (1/19) at 9 a.m., as the varsity competes at the Northwestern (Iowa) Red Raider Invitational in Orange City, Iowa, and the White Team (junior varsity) competes at the Minnesota West CTC Open in Worthington, Minn.
