CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (3/7/08) -- With five individuals winning first-round matches and all seven remaining alive, the Augsburg College wrestling team stands in second place after the first session of the NCAA Division III National Championships on Friday morning at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Augsburg has 13.5 points, behind first-place Wartburg (Iowa) with 22.0 points. Wisconsin-La Crosse, with six of its eight wrestlers winning first-round matches, is in third with 13.0 points. Four Auggies earned bonus-point victories, with three winning by major decision and one by a pin.

Tonight's second round, which begins at 6 p.m., will eliminate the field in each weight class to the final eight, who earn All-American honors.

Willy Holst (SO, Prescott, Wis.) improved to 29-2 on the season with his 10th pin of the year, a 4:21 match-ender over Erik Smith of Wilkes (Pa.) at 149 pounds. After gaining an escape 16 seconds into the second period, Holst gained a takedown and quickly moved for back points, earning the pin.

At 125, defending national runner-up Seth Flodeen (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn.) opened his tournament with a dominant performance, claiming three takedowns, two near-falls and 4:43 riding time en route to a 14-0, major-decision victory over David Penny of Ohio Northern. Flodeen is now 22-7 on the year.

At 141, unseeded Jason Adams (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) opened his first national tournament appearance with a 9-1, major-decision win over sixth-seed Nicholas Sanchez of Heidelberg (Ohio), improving to 29-8 on the season. Lang built a 6-0 lead after the first period with a takedown and two 2-point near-falls, but surrendered two near falls in the first minute of the second period to cut the lead to 6-5. Lang maintained the advantage with two reversals to re-build the lead.

Two-time All-American Robbie Gotreau (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored a 6-0 victory over Treavor LeBlanc of Cortland State (N.Y.) at 184, improving to 27-11 on the season. Gotreau built his lead with two takedowns and a 1:43 riding-time advantage.
